Range?

Hello all,

I am new to magix video pro x8 and have a question. I used to edit with Vegas but not sure what the range is. What does range do and when rendering, has the checkbox for range. Do I need to do this before rendering to can I just select with the blue slides what should be rendered? Does it take longer to render if applying range?

If you have not done so I would suggest you read the installed PDF manual available under Help.

A Range ( somtimes referred to as In/Out points ) determines what happens depending on operation you are doing eg:

Importing to the timeline
- using the source monitor you can set a range (In / Out points) in a long video clip and then drag the selected part only to the timeline.
On the timeline
- you can set a range for example to set a transition to all objects in the range.
Exporting
- set a range on the timeline and in the dialog box check the export range option and only that range is exported.

Only the range is rendered - so if the range is eg 50% of the timeline then the render should be quicker then rendering the whole timeline - how much quicker depends on the complexity within the range compared to the rest of the timeline.

Hi,

Further to what John EB mentioned, do a search for "range" in the Help file, either the F1 file or the pdf. There are many uses for ranges and you need to see the context for them.

There is probably a lot of jargon that will be new to you, so you should read the quick start part of the manual and then flip through to see everything that is available. It's time-consuming but saves time in the long run.

There are things that VPX can do that Vegas cannot do, and vice versa.

As for Vegas, could you quickly describe what are events and regions? I am curious.

In Vegas Pro:

Events are in VPX / MEP terms are video or audio objects and takes .

Regions are project markers but more versatile in their use.

(ex Vegas Pro user - v7 IIRC )

Just returned from the first in-law camping trip; next one without in-laws, I hope, starts in a week. We drove through Nashville (en Beauce, Quebec) on our way to St. Zacharie, last outpost before the wild frontier between Canada and the USA, and about as far as you can go in the Saints. Definintely not North Devon.

Thanks for the definitions. That was my guess, but I was hoping that events were more sophisticated like effects, meaning an event would be an effect.

It would be nice to be able to set more than one range in VPX, but that would require a range manager, which for a pro program, would be nice as well. However, given the multiple uses for ranges, it would probably become complex very quickly.

Reading through some of the posts on the Sony Vegas forum, it seems that one of the things that you can do in VPX but not in Vegas is copy the properties of an object (event), such as one or more effects, and paste these properties on one or more objects (events). I do this regularly and was surprised to see someone bring it up on the Vegas forum wish list.

Checking through the Vegas manual you can do this with events attributes.properties and effects.

Memory must be slipping with age!!!

I had to use Ulead Video Studio about 18 months ago and it reminded me why I changed from Vegas to MEP 11 .
