proxy rendering was skipped.. - TRIAL MAGIX Movie Studio 2023 Platinum

Tibor-Floky wrote on 10/21/2022, 11:47 AM

Hello,

I`ve downloaded MAGIX Movie Studio 2023 Platinum today for trying video editing on my notebook.

I have some sample video files: 4k 30fps, 4k 60fps, 2,7k 120fps, ... for testing.

I can add all those samples to "TRIAL MAGIX Movie Studio 2023 Platinum" with automatically creating proxy files, for speed it all up. This seems to work nice now, but not with 2,7k 120fps video file. When I try to add it to Magix, it says "proxy rendering was skipped. Creation of proxy is not required for the source file." That makes it impossible to work with this 2,7k video, while others are working nice and smooth. You can find more info about the 2,7k video there as well.

Do you know why Magix does not want to create proxy?

thank you

TF

@Tibor-Floky

The answer to why they were not created is in what you wrote. The program considers that Creation of proxy files is not required for the source file. IOW, they are not needed, apparently.

Did you try inserting your 2.7K file into the timeline? With what result?

If the lack of proxy files created from such a source is creating problems for you I think you will need to ask Magix Support why proxies are not be created. To do so, click the Support link in the header of this page and follow carefully through each succeeding page, always choosing the option to Contact Support, often to be found right at the bottom of each page.

Hello, thank you.

Yes, I did try to insert 2,7k 120fps video into a timeline, thumbnail are created in timeline one by one correctly. Than if i grab pointer and try to shake the mouse from left to right, the video in the "preview window" is not reacting smoothly. It just jumps, waits, jumps, ... Actually 2,7k video behaves as bad as 4k 60fps and FHD 30fps video with proxy files disabled. After I enable proxy file for 4k 60fps and FHD 30fps video, than "mouse shaking left to right" makes the video in "preview window" react smoothly and super fast again.

So I supposed that if 2,7k 120fps video would have proxy file created, it might solve its non-smoothness in "preview window" as well. And because MAGIX Movie Studio refused to create that proxy file, it seemed to me as a error.

I`m just wondering what might caused to MAGIX Movie Studio to think, it does not need proxy file for 2,7k testing video. Also I`d like to know if I can force proxy file to be created for all imported videos somehow.

Thank you.

TF

And yes, I tried to write to Magix support as well. We`ll see :)

I`m just wondering what might caused to MAGIX Movie Studio to think, it does not need proxy file for 2,7k testing video

I can't put my finger on it, but I'm sure that, occasionally, when I try to pre-render a section of timeline, Magix says it is not necessary, even though it plays really badly.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

What format is the 2.7k file?

A MediaInfo analysis would tell us more about the video clip and may suggest why the clip is not 'proxied' see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a clip to get the data in the correct format for posting in a comment.

I have had this in the past as well when using the timeline render section option. 👍.

In Movie Studio 2023, the 'auto search' and prompt to pre-render of the timeline, as in older versions of MEP, is no longer available. A range has to be set manually and there is no prompt asking if you want to pre-render it does it.

Hi Al.

I'm convinced this is caused by problems with audio having to be kept in sync more than adding complexity via using additional effects in most situations. So where there are crossover fades, or additionally mixed in sound tracks often cause the most stuttering, even stoppages. Sometimes stuttering can be reduced or eliminated by adjusting the audio buffer and sample rates in the program settings but that can produce lagging in the use of the playback controls. The same problem can occur when trying to auto pre-render and skip areas which will still stutter.

The word 'Proxy' always appears in the audio track and not the video portion when importing with proxy files. Why?

While adding effects often does contribute to producing stutters I'm convinced that because audio is buffered to memory and collected prior to where it is needed, that memory speed combined with disc read and write speeds contribute as much as adding effects and on simple projects more so. There is also the clause in the manual of MEP 2022 that if there is not sufficient motherboard memory that proxy files will not be created and in the support articles for Movie Studio 2023 it says proxies will only be used when CPU is chosen in the Import, processing and export options in the program settings.

Look at this.

Hello,

I see. I`m IT pro for 20 years running my own telecommunication company :) I really know what I offered to public ;) I just have spare brand new laptop here on my table (T14 G3 Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U, 32GB RAM, GPU 680M) with even unregistered Win10 for testing. After all testing will be done, I`ll reinstall the OS/HDD completely anyway.

That file does not seem to be that large.

Have you tried setting the program settings to use the CPU only in the device settings 'Import, Processing and Export' boxes?

If you have and that hasn't worked then if you would be willing to upload that small file to google drive so we could download and test it on our systems, we may be able to say whether it is playable without having to re-encode it or not. If we can play it with no trouble then we may have to look at the specification of your machine to see if any alterations to the program or system need to be done.

Hi

The 2.7K video file looks like standard HEVC video, so there should be no issues with it.

If you are using the Lenovo T14 laptop then the R 680M GPU has more than enough power to be able to decode HEVC in real-time or better, this may be why Movie Studio considers proxy creation is not necessary.

Do note once you start adding effects etc then preview playback can slow down, even with proxy files, as some effects are not accelerated on the GPU and rely on the CPU.

As @CubeAce has suggested - a sample file for testing would help.

Hello,

when I switch 'Import, Processing and Export' boxes to CPU and try to import the 2,7k video, Magix says "Unfortunatelly, the function 'HEVC-Codec' is not available due to licencing conditions".

I`m now testing to import 2,7k video on both laptops. T14 G2 and T14 G3. On G2 proxy file is no created, but import video file to time-line finishes - but it is not good and not smooth, choppy. While on G3 laptop, Magix freezes completely during importing 2,7k video and I have to manually kill the running process of the Magix program - this you can see on video.

I`ve uploaded testing samples to mega:

https://mega.nz/folder/N2gymQSD#Gx5v3uxN4gJ4fai-Ol82YQ

There is also video shot on my cell phone. There is T14G3, which shows importing 4k 60fps is OK, but 2,7 120fps freezes Magix.

Thank you for patience and helping :)

Hmmm... VPX 12 creates a proxy for that 2.7k file, but MEP 2021 doesn't (neither programs have the current three "device options" dropdowns).

The file in VPX 12 goes like a rocket (using the proxy) but in MEP 2021 runs like a tortoise on a go-slow.

MMS 2023 behaves like MEP 2021: "Proxy rendering was skipped". "Creation of a proxy is not required for the source file" Oh, yea? Says who! 😂 And what's more, I have CPU selected in all three Device options dropdowns.

I reckon there's some dodgy code floating around somewhere.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi.

I had no problems playing any of the files but like Al, MEP refused to create a proxy file for the 2.7 k file. Whether that was because of the resolution or frame speed I can't be sure but suspect it is the frame speed and not the resolution there may be audio sync problems in trying to convert what is not considered a standard frame rate. The 2.7k file was played back at it's native speed alongside the 60 fps clips.

As I imported all the clips without using proxy files at all and they played back just fine and begs the question 'Why are you bothering with proxy files'? If it is because you are suffering a slight stuttering then I suggest increasing the audio sampling rate slightly in the program settings. Just bumping that up from the default value by one amount should cure that.

You have your Go-Pro set sensibly at a constant frame rate but your phone may be producing variable frame rate video clips. They don't import anywhere near as easily and is the bugbear of many a video editing package.

Having said all that we (myself and a handful of other users) have noticed AMD systems do seem to have more difficulty with some file types over Intel based ones, and that those systems without an additional GPU within the CPU as well as a separate GPU suffer even more.

Hi

After extensive testing including stripping out of the video the Time Code stream, conversion to 1920 x 1080 at the same bitrate/framerate, both MMS 2023 and VPX 14 will not create a proxy file.

If I convert a different 4K UHD HEVC file to the 2.7k files dimensions, bitrate, framerate etc, the file imports and creates a proxy in both MMS 2023 and VPX 14 as normal.

Everything I do points to another 'GoPro oddity' about the 2.7k file, and the derivatives I created from it, that is not showing up in the MediaInfo data.

I think you need to raise a support ticket, include a link to this topic and also to the original file for Magix to have a look at it.

Hello CubeAce,

I tried to find, where I can change audio sampling rate in Movie Studio 2023 Platinum. I find it only here: File - Settings - Movie - Movie settings - Audio sample rate. But it is already at 48000Hz and I can`t increase it.

@Tibor-Floky

Slightly OT I think but

it is already at 48000Hz and I can`t increase it

Why would you want to do that???

48kHz Sample Rate is the "standard" for audio-for-video and gives an upper limit to the frequency response of 24kHz. The highest frequency that any human can hear is about 20kHz (and that level reduces considerably with age) so any and all sounds in the 20kHz to 24kHz range are likely to be audible only to your dog or cat, if you have one!

Also, no known loudspeaker system can actually reproduce any frequency substantially above 20kHz!

If you use a higher sampling rate, e.g., 88.2kHz or even 96kHz, and the "original" is at 48kHz, there will be no audio present above 24kHz and you will be recording digital noise, using up disk space (a 96kHz audio file is twice as large as a 48kHz file of the same audio) and adding nothing to the listening experience!

If you do (still!!) want to change the audio sampling rate you will have to do so in a dedicated convertor, like Handbrake; MEP can (usually) play files with "unusual" rates but does not permanently convert them until and unless the final project is exported.

Hi Al.

Yes, I understood that!

The fact is though that the OP's posted MediaInfo data shows the SR as 48kHz; given that that SR is the "standard" for video my concern is that changing it (to increase it) will actually achieve no benefit at all and simply consume disk space!

OTOH, checking/adjusting the MEP/MS Settings for the Audio Buffer could well achieve an improvement!

Maybe my comment was misunderstood.

You should go to the program settings and not the movie settings. And adjust the buffer amount of the sampling rate, not the frequency of the sampling rate. Try not to adjust the actual buffer size as that has more of an adverse effect on playback control response times. Try the one with the arrow next to it first in my image below.

[Edit] For some reason I can't at present upload an image. Will try again later.

@emmrecs

Hi Jeff.

While you are correct about what most of us we can hear and what most loudspeakers can reproduce (some do go below 50Hz and above 20kHz.) The idea of using higher sample rates is more to do with the conversions of analog signal to digital and back again and the smoothness of the signal in comparison to the original. A lot of how successful this is can be dependent on the quality of the audio chain and in particular, the DACS and ADCS. It's not the frequencies heard of the instruments so much as the timing of the sound reflections and sub-harmonics that gives the the final file a better spacial awareness of the recording along with a higher bit depth for those willing to crank up the volume want to hear the tiniest sounds clearly against the loudest sounds presented within the stereo sound stage. A good system set up correctly will give a sound stage much deeper and wider than the speaker placement would suggest. I sometimes get sound coming slightly from behind me from only having two speakers in use.

All of this of course is lost on most systems and of no practical use to the majority and little use to encoding video audio at present. There is also precious little out there to listen to and its main advantage lies in the recording of sound for mix-down more than for public consumption.

Ray.

Hi Ray.

I fully agree with what you say about the audio chain etc. However, my point is really about converting existing audio to a higher SR!

If an existing recording has been created using a sample rate of 48kHz, any frequency above 24kHz has already, in effect, "disappeared". There is no method known to man that can "restore" those "disappeared frequencies" I believe.

OTOH, I also agree that a higher bit depth can, and does, affect the "overall sound" by potentially lowering the noise floor and reducing any adverse effects of dither. Almost all my "serious" audio work is now undertaken in Adobe Audition CC, whose native format is 32 bit. That does make a difference, albeit at either 44.1kHz or 48kHz!
