Pro X14 will not work with DNxHR files as it requires Quicktime why?

sjmackinder wrote on 6/11/2022, 12:55 AM

I have just purchased at high cost Pro X14 and found that it does not work with DNxHR files as recorded on my Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. It tells me that I need to install quicktime to enable these files to be accepted. I cannot install quicktime as this is no longer compatible with Win11 so rendering Pro X14 useless. Sadly Pro X14 is a step backwards as my Pro X7 on my win8 machine works with these files, although very inefficiently. Hence the reason I bought a hugely expensive Dell XPS9710 and Pro X14!

Hi

. . . . I cannot install quicktime as this is no longer compatible with Win11 so rendering Pro X14 useless. . . .

Are you getting any error message when you try to install QuickTime?

I have Quicktime installed on Windows 11 and it works fine with VPX 14, however it is now considered as obsolete for Windows, there has been no development for 6+ years, and the install you get does not support some modern video formats, supported formats are ProRes, JPEG/JPEG 2000, PNG and QT encoded, and some codecs, eg h.264/AVC for which native support is available.

From your first post in 2016 here, where you had a similar issue , how did you resolve this with VPX 7?

No error message at all during Quicktime install. Years ago I installed Quicktime to solve my problem on Win8. Once QT is installed, if I try opening large .mov files from the 12G, winmedia & VLC have no issues at all. Even if I try opening QT without using a specific file it does not even open.

Do you mean VPX 14 won't open the file despite Quicktime being installed? For Quicktime there is nothing to open other than the player if you installed it.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the DNxHR clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Can you upload a short, 10 to 15 second long, DNxHR test video file to somewhere like Dropbox or WeTransfer for us to test with.

Seems crazy that modern players can handle the .mov files but new software from Magix cannot, very depressing!!

VPX reports an error when trying to import a .mov file, it states that I need to install QT to enable the import of this type of file. Even after installing QT there is a problem with VPX in that it allows the file to be imported but there is no video content only audio. The video is just blank white.

I downloaded your file but nothing on my computer seems able to play it! It will "open" in VPX 14 but the video is simply a blank, white screen and there is no audio.

I have QT installed and did not see any error message about a problem linked to "lack" of QT, but I am using Win 10.

Nothing in the MediaInfo analysis strikes me as "unusual" except I see it is using an Avid codec which may be proprietary. Avid have a "habit" of locking in users to their own hardware - witness the fact that ProTools files often cannot be read by other audio software, though this may be irrelevant here, I'm honestly not sure.

I am not sure where to go from here as I cannot use Pro X14 as it is. I have asked Magix Support for assistance so do I wait now?

What I also dont understand is that the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G is a common piece of video recording equipment so why have there not been other people with issues?

@sjmackinder

Hi

. . . . Video Assist 12G is a common piece of video recording equipment . . . .

It is, however you will probably find that the majority of users are using MACs with Avid Media Studio.

Any reason why not to use Apple ProRes 422 HQ encoding in the Video Assist 12G? ProRes 4:2:0, 4.2.2 and 4:4:4:4 (Alpha channel) import into VPX 14 for me with Quicktime installed.

Well you're a star John, it worked with Apple Pro Res, well I never. Thank you so much, I had even got to the point whereby I downloaded and installed DaVinvci Resolve but it is so complex and so different from the Pro X layout and editing.

@sjmackinder

Hi

Thanks for the feedback and pleased you are now sorted.

. . . . DaVinvci Resolve but it is so complex and so different from the Pro X  . . . . agreed it is not IMHO a user friendly program though a lot of users like it.
