Photostory 2023

I just purchased Delux photostory 2023 and it keeps freezing up to where I cannot click on anything or do anymore with the video once it freezes, I owned 2022 and did not have this problem, as soon as I upgraded to 2023 is when it started happening, any ideas, I have tried restarting the PC, I have removed the program from my computer and reinstalled and still keeps happening

Hi

Try the following:

  1. Right click the program shortcut and select Run as Administrator

    - if this works:
     
  2. try disabling your antivirus Folder/Ransomware protection feature is blocking the program and run the program normally.

If both options 1 and 2 work then add an exception for the program to your antivirus program Folder/Ransomware protection feature - how you do this will depend on the antivirus software.

If only option 1 works then you can make the Run as Administrator a permanent option in the shortcut - right click the shortcut and select Properties.

In the properties dialog select the Compatibility tab and turn on the Run this program as an administrator option and OK the dialog.

If neither 1 or 2 work then we need more information:

  • Computer specification, Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with if this is a laptop. 

    I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.
     
  • Are the graphics card drivers up to date?
     
  • To determine what was causing the crashing of Photostory, without the hassle of trying to pull apart the log file, run the Windows tool View Reliability history - it is available by several routes

    a. Inside the Windows Control Panel under System and SecuritySecurity and Maintenance

    b. Click the Windows button and with start menu showing, type reliability, the tool should appear in the list - run it.

    c. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog then type in perfmon /rel then click OK

 

The following window should open,

When you select a date column which has a red circle in the Fault row you should see entries for crashes similar to those shown above bottom left, these are for Movie Studio 2023, however you should see entries for Photostory,

Double click one of the Photostory fault notifications, the dialog in the red box opens and details what the Faulting Module was.

Post a screenshot of that dialogue or copy and paste the text.

Thank you for getting back to me. Unfortunately nothing I'm doing is working, I've even uninstalled the program and reinstalled it, the app keeps crashing, I'm not sure exactly how to do all those things you listed before.I'm not super computer savvy, everything was working fine on the 2022 version before I installed the updated 2023 version, now the app keeps crashing, it will let me start to watch a video that I have been working on and then roughly at the one minute mark or so it freezes, I believe all my drivers are up to date. This is a relatively new PC. Within the last couple years or so, I spent a lot of money on this PC specifically for these videos that I make, I'm not sure what to do, everything else on my computer works fine except for magix

John has given you a step-by-step process to obtain the fault details that we really need if we are to have any chance of being able to help you! Please do your very best to at least follow the method in his third bullet point and post here the results of what you see.

If you're not sure how to obtain the details of the spec of your computer (and btw, the fact that it is relatively new does not guarantee that things will work as they should) can I recommend a utility called Speccy.? The free version (there is no need to buy the Professional version unless you wish to) will analyse your computer hardware etc. and allow you to discover exactly what is in your computer!

Once you have that information, follow the link in John's post to give us the details we really need!

Here is some info that I copied and pasted after following your instructions, I also downloaded the CCleaner and did a deep clean on the computer as well as updated several drivers, still it freezes up after about a minute of playing or working on a new project.

The faulting module is the Xara 3D titling feature in the program.

Are you using any of the 3D titles in the project, if so which one and did you make any changes to it eg adding effects?

I do not use the 3D feature on the magix program at all, I did notice the last few times when I used the collage feature ( to put several pics together) that the collage was fuzzy and when I checked the exact one I used it showed that it was the 3D one, but I didn't choose that, so I'm not sure exactly what's going on with that, is there a way for me to disable the 3D feature possibly or fix that somehow? I never use the 3D

I tried changing the collage once I realized it had the 3D on it, so I probably overlaid it with something else thinking that I was changing it. That's the only thing I can think of because like I said earlier I did not want the 3D feature

Hi,

Just to be clear, there is a huge difference between 3D and 2D. PhotoStory does not do 3D.

You had a title that was made using 3D Maker on the timeline. The titles are actually 2D on the timeline but in a XAR file because it was made with and uses Xara 3D Maker. This is not real 3D in a project, just a 2D image made using a program that uses 3 dimensions to create a 2D output, with or without animation, so please understand the difference. Call them 3D titles and we'll know what they are, don't call them 3D alone.

Some users have had trouble using the so-called 3D titles. You can check by adding 1 to the timeline (in a test project) to see if there is a problem with using these. They are under Title Templates. If it freezes PhotoStory, exit it (Task Manager) and try again. I had it freeze on the first test below, but I am using PhtoStory Premium VR 20.0.1.62.

If it freezes again, which it just did for me twice, we can probably assume that PhotoStory has a bug.

I don't understand how you could have a collage with one of these 3D Titles in it. Is there one that somehow uses titles by itself? They normally use the images/video clips that are on the timeline - no titles unless you somehow included one.

Also, please post details about your computer as was asked for. Most of this is in Windows, Settings, System, About.

Thanks for all your help so far, I know there is a difference between 3D and 2D lol, I have been using Magix for several years, never had this problem, I have used the 3D titles creating different wording / titles several times in several videos and never had a problem, clearly there was or is a problem with this one, I am looking for a solution to either fix this / repair it or remove the bug anyway that I can, I have included a summery of info for what I think you are looking for in regards to my computer info, in your opinion if I remove the existing program from my computer and then purchased the program again - uploading a new program with nothing from the old program attached - would this fix this issue ? Thanks Again

This has not been dropped, 3D (Stereo) has been a feature of Photostory Deluxe from as early as Photostory 10 (2011), possibly earlier, and more recently (2016) 360° (VR)

Hi John EB,

Thanks for that. I wasn't aware that PhotoStory could do 3D. I was looking for the hamburger menu at the top left of the preview monitor to be able to switch into 3D. The menu is at the bottom right and now I see the Anaglyph option.

For @jeff-newman, I wonder if the problem with the 3D titles is a display device issue. He doesn't have built-in UHD graphics from what I see (i7-9700F). What should his Display settings be?

I really appreciate all the help that you guys have given me so far, but, I really need a solution to this, I purchased the program again thinking that I'll just start fresh, I downloaded the new 2023 Magix deluxe photo story, I even purchased it under my wife's email and my son's name to try to distance any connection, I removed the existing photo story from my computer, once I downloaded the new program and went to get into it to get going, my old videos that I was working on came up as available for me to load, I don't know how this is since this is a brand new program that I downloaded, so I created a new project then it froze on me as well, like I stated in an earlier post I have had magix for several years, and never had this problem, at this point I'm spending money on this thing and it's not working. Please can you help me come up with a solution or any ideas as to what I may do

That is quite possible, by default PS selected the Intel iGPU, and only the iGPU is used, however manually changing this to my RTX 2060, both GPUs are used.

Are the RTX 2070 drivers up to date? The latest version is 526.98 (31.0.15.2698).

I would suggest you look up how to take screen shots, there is a lot of interference in the mobile shots which can make reading them difficult.

Hi

Sorry I never trust 3rd party software, only the GPU manufacturers, to tell me the drivers are up to date.

Could you open Device Manager and locate the Display Adapters section and open it. Double click on the RTX 2060 entry to open the Properties dialog.

Click the Driver tab - there you will see the installed driver version.

It is saying the following

I believe I have fixed the issue, I was able to download an updated NVIDIA driver, the new driver version is 31.0.15.2225, I have started a new video and so far seems to be working l, thanks for your help

As you may have found out you also cannot trust Windows to update the drivers.

That driver is not the latest, where did you find it?

Assuming this is a PC, and not a Notebook, the latest version here.

This is a PC and I downloaded it from the same place as the link you just sent, the NVIDIA site, I will download the latest version, it seems that was most likely the problem
