Old version of Magix on new version od Windows

Forever and a day ago,I grabbed a cheap copy of Magix Movie Edit Pro 12 and installed it on my desktop, and promptly forgot it existed. Now, I've got a laptop, a burning hatred for Windows Movie Maker, windows 7 and an annoying error message asking me to downgrade so I can use the software. I'm wondering if anyone's found a workaround for this, or if I'm stuck using crappy freeware? (buying a newer copy isn't an option, sadly.)

The problem is that the software code was written for the operating system of the time, I think for anything that is version 12, that would be up to Windows XP. Which means that it could be a 16 bit architecture for the software code, maybe even less. That may run ok on a Vista system, though I think that even would have some stability issues, I don't think Window 7 will run that and unfortunately the only workaround is the option you cannot do...

Sorry

Actualy with a little trial and error, I managed to find what seems to be a workaround.
I went into the CD and made a shortcut for the setup.exe on my desktop. Right-clicked on the shortcut and under properties, set it to run in compatibility mode for XP sp3.
At the very least, it got the install to start, but, unfortuneately, there was a small scratch on the disk that won't come out(my own fault, never store CDs near beads and/or sand, don't let your cats walk on them, and always rip an ISO for backup), so I was unable to finish the install. irritating, after spending the time making it work.
I'd like to know if that fix would work for anyone else, who's got a working disk, though, be nice to know if it's worth it to grab a used copy, should I ever stumble across one. Magix really is the most user-friendly program I've used for video editing.
