“No playback device activated”

Hi,

I have recently re-installed one of my older versions of Movie Edit Pro, onto my new PC.

At the moment I can load video files into the editor, but when I click play, it comes up with a message saying:

“No playback device activated! Please activate a playback device from the ‘System control/sound’ (connecting a device to the sound card may solve this issue).”

I have no clue what this error message is, but how do I fix it?

@jak.willis

The error message specifically mentions your sound card because the problem is to do with your computer's audio settings. Most commonly, this is caused if your sound card is default setting to something other than the normal video standard, i.e. 48kHz. Unfortunately, Windows, in its "wisdom", often sets this to 44.1kHz.

To "correct" the error, open Control Panel>Sound and select your soundcard. This is my computer's, yours will look different, but the highlighted entry is my external audio interface. Make sure your sound card is highlighted and click on Properties.

Select the Advanced tab and make sure the settings are as highlighted below:

@jak.willis @emmrecs

Further to Jeff's advice, if you don't have an actual sound card but an onboard audio chip (mine's a Realtek something or other) then, if you don't have a digital output system, you'll need to use "Speakers" under to Playback Tab and probably Stereo Mix under the Recording Tab.

It took me ages when I had my new computer to get the audio to play and record; who would have thought that the playback would be "Speakers" 😊?

Hi

These are the Realtek sound card settings I use -

The Windows system sounds are turned off to avoid the 'pings and whistles' of Windows notifications etc, and the Spatial setting to avoid 'weird' audio effects.
