Trying to download program that I use all the time, purchased 2017 and I receive this message: Your update service has expired, so you can not activate this version of the program on a new program.

When quoting errors please quote the error message in full including the error number, or post a screen shot of the error dialog.
I suspect that you have downloaded and installed the current version of the program and are trying to activate it with the 2017 version serial number.
This you cannot do with out an active Update Service subscription.
The download for the version you originally purchased should be available in your account at magix.com - login there and select My Products - there you will see your registered product(s), serial numbers and download link.
