need help with configuring MIDI controller

Samplitude Studio 2023, Windows 11

I just bought a MIDI keyboard which is mostly working, but there's one thing I can't figure out. The keyboard has Play and Record buttons on it, but I can't get them to do anything. The keyboard does work correctly for controlling instruments, so I know it's at least connected apart from this one function. I'm guessing that I need to do something with the Hardware Controller menu in program settings but I can't get that to work either. Can anyone help me out with this?

@psychojosh13 I suggest you create a a new hardware controller and select the Mackie preset. This is a widely used protocol and your keyboard also might support it (check its manual).

No luck :(

The manual for the keyboard just says that it's plug-and-play and works automatically with Ableton, Logic, Cubase, and FL Studio. The plug-and-play did work just fine in Samplitude for using it as an instrument, so that covers 99% of what I want, it would just be a nice extra convenience if I could make those extra couple of buttons work as well.

@psychojosh13 Ok. You added the controller (Mackie Control preset) and selected your keyboard as an input, correct? Do you get some feedback on the MIDI monitor dialog under the Customize Controllers tab when pressing the buttons on your keyboard? I think you can also make a right click on an entry in the MIDI column. For example, scroll to the position of the Play button (should be number 82). You need map the messages from your keyboard to the control in Samplitude.
