My MAGIX software will not cut a DVD to Disc

rickduley wrote on 6/18/2024, 8:26 PM

I have used Video Easy and the Movie Edit Pro Plus to convert recorded MTS files to DVD and write to disc for years. A change of computer put me on to Windows 11 and I haven't been able to create DVD discs since. Repeated appeals to MAGIX Support over the past two months have got me nowhere. In desperation I purchased Video Pro X16 but this is no better. I can write data files to DVD and CD using Windows Explorer OK.

Here is one of the files I am trying to convert https://1drv.ms/v/c/bb228147f3dd175d/EVDC0Qlw1B9AlLTHsPHZ_roB1cEm3cWdqVs8minlKcAKrQ?e=02ypvo

Here are some Error Files from trying to create the disc

Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks

Hi

. . . . Windows 11 and I haven't been able to create DVD discs . . . . and the error message in the burn log . . .

DBK BurnProject: 224 - write error occurred on disc . . . .

Try burning the DVD to ISO image using the Image recorder option in the Burn dialogue, then burn the ISO image to disc using Windows Explorer - right click the ISO image file, file extension is .iso, select Show more options, Burn disc image.

You mention Movie Edit Pro Plus, I assume you went back to this after Movie Studio 2024, is this correct and it is at version 19.0.1.31, i.e. Movie Edit Pro 2020 Plus?

What make and type of discs are you using?

As to the make and type of disc - "Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB 16x White Inkjet Spindle 50 Pack"

I'll try that ISO trick in the morning.

A number of us have found that using DVD-R, rather than DVD+R, often proves to create fewer failed disc burns.

Hi.

@emmrecs is correct. DVD plus was introduced by manufacturers not wanting to pay royalty fees to Pioneer / Sony / other conglomerate, that came up with the DVD dash (not minus) system. DVD dash is compatible with around 90% of all DVD player / recorders whereas the DVD plus disks do not adhere strictly to the DVD dash format and suffer a higher failure rate.

Hi Rick

The image recorder option, magenta arrow, appears in the dropdown indicated by the yellow arrow in the Burn dialog as shown below

I use this as one of 2 methods of burning. The ISO image can be 'mounted' as a drive in Windows and tested using VLC (does not always work well with some menus) or PowerDVD.

For completeness, the second method is to use DVD-RW or BD-RE (BluRay) rewritable discs for testing in DVD/BluRay player before burning to permanent disc.

Thanks @johnebaker

Two things about trying that:

(1) The ISO for True Grit is too large to get on a standard DVD-R and no-one sells DVD-R DL discs.

(2) Trying to cut a much smaller file to DVD-R I got spat out again

https://1drv.ms/i/c/bb228147f3dd175d/EWQ4bVNc6OBEpvpwjYe--MUBIZiks0ZX0lC-DRo_k2eKzQ?e=x9FeDJ

I still can't cut a video file to DVD disc. 😖

In any case, until I shifted to Windows 11 I did not have to go through all that rigamarole. Why cannot even Video Pro X16 write to disc? X16 will not read MTS files so MAGIX can have that back, but Video Easy and Movie Edit Pro Plus go right through the process up to finalising disc then stop with that an error message.

Hi

In reverse order:

. . . . X16 will not read MTS files . . . .

If MEP and Video Easy reads them, then so can VPX 16. Do you get any error message when you try to import the mts file.

If the video comes in blank/black then try changing the VPX program settings, Device options tab, Import, Processing and Export options to CPU. If this works then check the drivers for the UHD 630 are up-to-date - the latest is 31.0.101.2128 . I have the same GPU, and it works fine with MTS files as you can see below

. . . . ISO for True Grit is too large to get on a standard DVD-R . . . .

This could be the cause of the burn error, IIRC you need to have a DL disc in the drive for the split point to be determined.

Which DVD preset are you selecting for the render portion of the burn process?

(2) Does load MTS but blank/black (that I assumed meant it wasn't loading).

(3) The Import etc. options are set to NVIDIA GeForce GT 730. The alternatives are CPU, Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630, Microsoft WARP Device. I don't know what that is all about, so, "What do I do now?"

(4) I haven't got as far as a DVD preset.

Hi.

The last compatible Win 11 drivers released for the GT 730 was in 2021. I am not sure but that could be a part of the problem. Changing the import / processing / export settings to the HD630 may help. Your older programs would have been compatible with the older nvidia driver for the GT 730 whereas VPX 16 probably isn't. The programs often pick up on various GPUs even though they can't be fully utilised. I'm sure @johnebaker or @emmrecs can confirm that.

Hi Rick

. . . . Sorry to be a drag John E but this is all above my pay scale. . . .

Not a problem.

. . . . older programs would have been compatible with the older nvidia driver for the GT 730 . . . .

Certainly, VPX 16 is not capable of using this graphics card fully, the feature required to do so is not available in the GT 730.

MEP 2020 would be able to use the GT 730., the upgraded graphics requirement came in with MEP 2021

To save money and making duff DVD's commonly nicknamed 'coasters'. I would suggest you get a couple of re-writeable discs, DVD-RW.

If your burner supports Blu-ray burning and you are making/wanting to make Blu-ray discs, a couple of BD-RE are also useful.

The process/steps I use, once a project is edited and considered 'complete' ( it often is not 😬) are:-

  1. Burn to an ISO image

  2. Burn the ISO image to rewritable disc either DVD-RW or BD-RE, whichever format I am making

  3. Test the disc in a player

  4. If there are 'issues' in the movie that need fixing, fix them, erase the rewritable disc and start again at step 1

  5. If no 'issues', then burn the ISO image to permanent disc, DVD-R or BD-R and erase the rewritable disc.

. . . . I haven't got as far as a DVD preset. . . . .

This would suggest you are using the default preset options as shown below

Note if the option in the yellow box says User defined: then it is trying to use the project settings, these can create an unplayable disc, the standard option for you would be the Standard DVD PAL as shown above.

However, the runtime, purple box above, is on the pessimistic side, I usually get nearer 2+ hrs for a 'full disc'. The dropdown, yellow box, has 'Long play' options which can increase the run time to 3+ hrs, however it does so at the expense of image quality.

In your case, if the standard preset will not fit on a disc, the Long play DVD PAL Video option would be the one to try.

HTH

Hi.

To upload files directly to the topic just use the button you see above where you are typing when replying.

To close gaps use the second mouse mode on the timeline editor and select the section cut with the scissors with a right click to delete. The gap will be close automatically but equally it could be dragged manually.

Also, all sections of the program can be resized and / or re-positioned and saved as a dedicated work space if need be.

You also have the option of choosing basic mode. I don't know if that would be easier or more familiar to you.

The second screen has many uses from inspecting video at a magnification for sharpness / detail to helping with colour correction.

There is very little you can't do with the program. It is very flexible but may be a steep learning curve if you have not used more complex programs in the past. Most of us here replying to questions are senior citizens and we do understand new ways of working can often be daunting.

(1) Can I use Window 1 as a frame with the other windows inside it (so I can use the toolbar up the top)?

(2) Can I get rid of Window 2? I am not blending movies so I don't see that I need it.

(3) Can I put Window 3 where Window 2 was so that I can extend the editing window (to see a couple more scene images in it)?

That'd be a great start.

Thanks

Hi.

As I said you can do pretty much what you want to. I had already reduced the size of the main program on screen by grabbing the edges and adjusting the sides and then dragged a few of the individual components around ready to resize.

Once done the program will remember your last layout when the program is reopened. The second monitor can not be disabled but can be hidden by dragging another work area over it. Sometimes it will reappear in front of the box hiding it but just click on the top area of the part hiding it to re-hide it again.

Thank you for posting your image directly into the topic.

Ray.

Hi Rick

If I am reading your requirement, you would like the same arrangement as MEP this can be done in a single step:-

Select Window, Windows arrangement, Minimal this will remove both the Source Preview monitor and the Project folder.

If you do use the Project Folder, I don't, select Window, Project folder.

Thank you both @CubeAce and @johnebaker. Now all I have to do is get VPX16 to record DVD to disc. It still refuses and I have a pile of 25-odd dead discs from failed attempts. 😩

Not trying to put the mockers on it but did you export to an ISO file as @johnebaker suggested and tried burning any type of disc using Windows? Because if that fails it could be your recorder. Over the years I got got through more than 7 various CD / DVD and Blu-ray recorders before I eventually gave up on them. My current Sony Bu-ray recorder still works but I only use it for creating CDs of my own created music.

Previous problems have been dirty or failing laser heads. Motor for tracking arm failure, disc loading motor failure and I've had all makes from Yamaha (Brilliant recorder while it lasted) LG, Sony and Asus. You could also check if there is a current firmware update for your recorder if such things still exist.

Even now Win 10 does not fully accept or give accurate information on discs created or played on the player but it works.

Ray.

Quoting from my post of June 21:

Two things about trying that:

(1) The ISO for True Grit is too large to get on a standard DVD-R and no-one sells DVD-R DL discs.

(2) Trying to cut a much smaller file to DVD-R I got spat out again

https://1drv.ms/i/c/bb228147f3dd175d/EWQ4bVNc6OBEpvpwjYe--MUBIZiks0ZX0lC-DRo_k2eKzQ?e=x9FeDJ

I still can't cut a video file to DVD disc. 😖

*******************************************************************

Yes, I did try writing an ISO as @johnebaker suggested but to no avail.

It's a new PC (well, refurbished, anyway) with a new DVD Drive. I have been pushing back the idea that the Drive is faulty. You are saying this is common? I have never had a failed DVD Drive in any of my computers.

Hi.

Probably not overly common as I have been using optical drives since Win 98 and in the early days quite heavily.

Also some burners had additional abilities such as label writing direct to disc or able to burn patterns or text information on the playable side such as my Yamaha drive used to be able to which may have contributed to early failure. Also always first try burning at the slowest available speeds for your drive as I found that is always more successful. Then try cranking the speeds up when you get it to work.

Did you look up your error code?

Ray.

Hi Rick

The error code suggest Windows cannot find the ISO file.

Where did you save this to, and does the error appear immediately when the burn process starts?

If the Desktop, or any other location that is not inside your Documents folder, the Windows Folder protection may be preventing the file being read.

. . . . a new DVD Drive . . . .

What is the make/model?

I put the tiny ISO file in Documents and tried again using RMC > Show more options > Burn disc image. Got the same error message.
