Music maker 14 has suddenly started demanding money from me 3 years after I purchased it!

Ricksprintshop wrote on 4/11/2011, 9:57 AM

I have been successfully using music maker 14 regularly for the past three or so years for converting .wav files to .mp3 files.

Today when I went to save a file in MP3 format,  a window titled  'MP3 encoder activation'  popped up telling me to activate my MP3 encoder, giving me the option to order a code online or via the post.

It will not let me proceed with any more MP3 file saves until I spend out the £6.99 it is demanding for the continued use of the program.

I have tried uninstalling and then re-installing the software but the problem still occurs.

I am assuming this must be some sort of a bug?

Appreciate any advice / pointers

Cheers

Hi,

MMM seems to don't find a mp3 codec on your PC. Check if you have a mp3 codec installed on your PC.

If not, try to instal Audacity freeware and its associated mp3 codec. Perhaps the presence of the mp3 Codec avoid this problem?

Actually I think if you get the latest Windows Media Player you get a MP3 codec.

A bug?

If a feature stops working after years without a new upgrade, it'll have to be a problem with the computer. These programs are not re-writing themselfes.

Anyway:
MP3 codecs are not free - at least not for the developers.

As far as I remember, older versions of the Music Maker had something like 30 or 40 MP3 exports included, after that you need the codec.

But nowadays it's not that hard to get a MP3 codec for you as customer. Music Maker would have to be more expensive if the had MP3 coding in it by default, but you can just download i.e. the Windows Media Player and then you'll have that codec on your harddisk and Music Maker should work.
