I overcame this problem by using the free audio editor Audacity. Record the existing sound track using Audacity (loop the output of the sound card to the input, with a splitter if necessary). Import the clips you want to insert into the soundtrack and then use the Time align option to line up the imported tracks with the insertion point. Use the 'Silence' option to remove any unwanted sound in the original sound track. The export the modified file as mp3 so that all of the tracks are mixed.
In the Magix program, use the option to set the sound level to zero for all of the clips and then insert the mp3 file. The clips will then be played at the insertion point. Bit of a procedure, but it works!
