MP4 Files Truncate When Added

miguel_cullera wrote on 6/11/2022, 7:28 PM

I have 3 MP4 videos from the same event. I am prepping them in PRO X 14 latest version. When I add them to the Project Folder and then Drag to the Timeline, the ends are automatically truncated. The amount that gets cut off seems to be in relation to the length of the video clip. For example:

Clip 1: 00:13:45 Native - In Pro X it is 00:13:27 (18 Seconds missing)

Clip 2: 00:37:09 Native - In Pro X it is 00:36:19 (50 Seconds missing)

Clip 3: 00:59:48 Native - In Pro X it is 00:58:29 (1 Min 19 Seconds missing)

I have tried adding and removing, starting a new project, all with the same result. Any ideas? Is it a setting?

Project format:

UHD/UHD-2, 59.94 fps, 3840x2160, 16:9 ratio

Thanks for any help!

Hello, welcome

In order for someone to help you:

Please include full PC specs and graphics card.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial from Moderator @johnebaker if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

there is one setting that may cause this problem but it seems doubtful.

Hi

The cutting off amount of the end varying directly proportional to the length of the video clip would suggest that the video framerate is Variable, or there are regular frame drops ie missing frames.

What camera /device was used to record the video?

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

In the Video section of the analysis if you see this:

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 30.036 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 29.960 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.120 FPS
Real frame rate                          : 30.000 FPS

then the video need converting to Constant framerate using a converter such as Handbrake.

Thanks for everyone's help.

John, you were correct. Turns out the videos were variable. Once converted they did not truncate. I am surprised that Pro X doesn't handle this on its own.

I need to learn Handbreak better. I match resolutions but left the quality slider in its default. There was a noticeable degradation in quality so I will try again. It ran for hours so I need to experiment with a small file.

@miguel_cullera

Hi

. . . . Pro X doesn't handle this on its own . . . .

Depending on the difference between the Minimum and Maximum framerate VPX can, in many instances, cope easily with the variation - the example I gave is a clip from my mobile phone which is handled correctly.

I have seen framerate ranges vary from about 5 fps up to 50 fps and this range cannot be handled correctly, Handbrake also struggles with large ranges of framerate in the same clip.
