MEP 2022 freezes for 10-seconds everytime | 30-seconds after startup!!

Apollo89x wrote on 3/28/2024, 9:04 AM

I have MEP Pro Plus (2022).

Since a few weeks ago the program has developed a bug, which now causes it to freeze-up for 10-seconds, approx 30-seconds after the program is opened... Every single time!
(No matter what video is loaded / Or even if there's no video at all loaded!)

I have not made any changes to my computer's settings / nor installed any new software, during the past few weeks or months, which could of caused this bug.

I have also tried the newest version of MEP (2024) :: And this fault did not occur on that version.
(So it cannot be that ''My laptop is too old too run the 2022 software'' :: As it runs the 2024 version fine)

#

But so can anyone advise on how to diagnose/fix what exactly is causing this fault, please?

(I have already tried doing a total uninstall/re-install of MEP :: But this bug is still present)

@Apollo89x Check your graphics driver is up to date,

(So it cannot be that ''My laptop is too old too run the 2022 software'' :: As it runs the 2024 version fine)

I don't think it is as simple as that. - can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Magix version, this will then always show at the bottom of your comments,

Thanks, I have updated my signature with all that info.

And I did already checked that my graphics driver is upto date :: And it was/is.

@Apollo89x

Hi.

If you only tried the trial version of MMS it is not fully functional and may not therefore show the same problems. A lot of what you have in the full 2022 version would not be being loaded on startup and depleting resources. Unless you do as @Former user has suggested we are working in the dark. Bugs are only bugs if other people can replicate and verify them. I am and have been running MEP 2022 since it came out with quite a few third party plugins and I'm having no problems with it editing 4K footage on a regular basis.

Most of the time freezing problems are hardware related or a Microsoft update or driver update may have affected it. It is not always hardware but often related. Knowing the hardware in use is an extra step we can look at to suggest actions that may remedy the problem. Without the information we are playing more of a guessing game than we need to and may take longer to get to the root of asking more questions than needed or even end with no resolution.

At the moment considering the program was running at one point I would hazard a guess at a lack of C: drive space which if the C: drive is less than 1TB then it should have at least 20% of free space for the program to load all the files into temporary folders while it works. That it will do before fully opening but once open those folders get larger quickly. They are hidden from the system so not easily seen in action.

Hello, but no, I did pay for + installed the full version of MEP (2024).

I have already disabled the Magix news & info displaying on start-up.

And my C-drive has 50GB available (*out of 240GB total capacity).

#

Just to add also, once I start using the program, it runs fine & doesn't freeze at all.

The freeze simply occurs 30-seconds after start-up, and lasts for 10-15seconds.

After that though it runs smoothly.

@Apollo89x Hi, when you checked your driver did you use the Windows option in Device manager, that often isn't correct, try the Nvidia website ..

The latest Nvidia Gaming driver is 551.86 & the latest Nvidia Studio driver is also 551.86 (thy're not always the same number), I use the Studio driver because that's what recommended for Vegas & others, but I believe Magix prefers the Gaming driver.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/drivers/

If your program starts up ok & freezes 30secs in then runs fine, that sounds like it's accessing something & because of your low powered PC it takes all resources to do that accessing, I have a 12TB mobile hardrive that goes to sleep & has to wake up for certain fxs... to work...

That is very close to the free space Windows requires to work effectively, 20% is recommended for small drives ( < 1TB ) add on the extra free space for video editors to work with, having 50GB free is not optimal.

Is the C: drive the only drive in the laptop, and/or are you working with an external USB drive containing the video files/images etc ?

To add to the question by @johnebaker .

Laptops of that time were coming with hard drives as opposed to SSDs. If you have a SATA drive have you de-fragmented it recently. If the program has a very fragmented drive it will be a lot slower as it hunts for data spread across the drive. But I agree with John. That is not a lot of space and if using an external drive for the project files, the speed, capacity and amount of free space on that drive could also need to be taken into account.

Hi,

Try this. Open the program, Import, navigate to a folder that has only a few photos, no videos, nothing exotic. Exit the program. Restart the program. Same delay?

I have found that trying to read whichever folder was last opened can cause problems if there happens to be some files that the program doesn't like...even if I am able to load them. There is a major slowdown each time.

Hi

Is your laptop the Asus ROG Strix Scar 2 with a 256GB SSD and a 1TB internal second drive installed?

If so SSD drives do not need, and should not be defragged, they are internally auto 'defragging'.

How much free space is available on the second drive?

Is the laptop using Microsoft Defender for the antivirus program or a 3rd party AV?

Does the 'freeze occur any time after starting editing or is just on startup?

In answer to the above questions:

1) Yes I do update my driver via Nvidia.
(Current driver is V 551.86 / Released & Installed on 19th (March 2024)

2) I have in previous months/years gone down to as little as 5GB available on my C-drive, but never encountered this issue.
So having 50GB available, (which is massively more than any program should ever require), should surely be sufficient to simply open a simple video-editing program?

3) I do have a D-drive yes, that has 488GB available (*out of 931GB total capacity)

4) I use Avast anti-virus, can hower disable that now, then try opening to see if has any impact.
(I've had avast for years though / Alongside MEP for years)

5) But no, the freeze only occurs approx 30-seconds after opening MEP (*even if no video file is loaded / merely MEP opening empty) :: And lasts for 10-15seconds, (during which time I cannot click anything buttons on MEP).
After those 10-15 seconds though the program works fine, loading new video-footage into the timeline doesn't cause any further freezes / likewise even doing processor-intensive tasks in MEP doesn't cause any issue.

I read somewhere years ago that Win 10 auto-defraggs all types of drives automatically. I haven't defragged a drive since Win 7.(2020), have had no read/write issues and my big drives are chockers.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

HI Al

. . . . I read somewhere years ago that Win 10 auto-defraggs all types of drives automatically. . . . .

Win 10, and 11, do auto defrag, however the PC/laptop must be idle before it kicks in according to its Scheduled runs, and the OS drive is a HDD. If it is a SSD then there should be no schedule job for it to be defragged, at least in Windows 11 there isn't.

Hello, I tried this (2x), including with my anti-virus disabled at the same time | But unfortunately it didn't make any difference.

As the program still seems to: ''Struggle with the workload'' of launching, and thus after 30-seconds, it needs to ''pause/rest'' for 10seconds, before it's fully set & ready to operate.

Thankyou, but I've done that check already previously, however there is nothing else running in the background/taking-up memory.

Even when MEP is running, it is using below 1% memory.

@Apollo89x

So the possibilities narrow. Your system should be coping but isn't.

Maybe it is time to check your C: drive for wear and tear with an application like this one. Unless anyone here knows a better tool?

If the program was working before and with less resources then maybe the disc is showing signs of failure. While I hope this is not the case it is worth checking. The problem with running a computer with lessening disc capacity is the same bits get written and erased to more and more often causing a localised area of more wear. See at least if any bad sectors are being reported as that could be an early warning sign. Drives do not always make noises before they fail. 🤞

The best way to describe/explain it is:

1) I launch MEP (*can be with or even without a video loaded / As the fault occurs even when no video is loaded)...

2) MEP opens, the video is loaded onto the timeline, and I can scroll around & edit the video as normal (during the first 20-30seconds after MEP has launched).

3) After 20-30 seconds though the screen freezes, and so I cannot scroll and/or click any buttons, for approx 10-seconds.

4) After that 10-second freeze, it returns to normal, and thus can operate the program as normal.

@Apollo89x

During this "10-15 seconds" of freeze, look in Taskmanager and see if there is any activity for the Magix app process.

It could be that MEP hasn't shut down properly at some time recently and it's trying to reset itself, or maybe a recent Windows update has messed it up (as mentioned by Ray @CubeAce above).

I know that the March Windows update KB5035853 has given some people a headache - I didn't notice anything but my wife's laptop developed glitches - so maybe that's caused a conflict on your system. See https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/03/16/windows-11-kb5035853-march-2024-update-causes-major-issues-bsods/

Just a thought.

@me_again

Hi Andy.

If the partition needed to download the update prior to the latest (KB5035941)update was too small and didn't install or fully install then I think but am not sure that the current one is the replacement to your KB5035853. It was certainly a large install but did go smoothly.

@Apollo89x

Hi

Thanks for the clarification of exactly when the freeze occurs.

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce the freeze, however monitoring what the program is doing in the first minute or so I suspect that the Store file cache may be 'corrupted'.

The cache is located in a folder in:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro edition\ShopManager\

edition = the version you have Plus, Premium

The folder name will consist of a string of characters and numbers of up to 32 characters.

Inside this folder you will see either:-

  • a folder called FileCache - if so, delete everything inside that folder

  • more folders with names consisting of a string of characters and numbers - delete them

Start MMS 2022, you may experience a short pause while the cache is recreated.

Hello...

So I have opened MEP (*no video file loaded / simply opened MEP totally blank)

And have attached below screenshots showing what task-manager showed of the CPU usage during the freeze (VS) how it looked after the freeze period had subsided:
