Magix Video Saver from 1917 with converter ver.5 colour red

I use Magix Video Saver purchased in 2017 with the red converter ver5. After some hundreds of videotapes it doesn't record any movies and transmitting from scart connected to TV-set is bumpy. Has the converter received its best before date?

Assuming you mean by 'bumpy' that the video image is now glitching, contains missing parts or drops out completely then this is not the converter.

The most common causes of the described effects are:

Poor tape storage resulting in deterioration of the recorded signal though loss of magnetic strength or print through - ie signal has duplicated onto the adjacent loop of tape in the cassette.
Aging of the tape resulting in loss of magnetic coating and/or hardening of the base substrate.
Dirty and/or worn video heads in the player.

If you are not getting any signal at all, has there been a change on the computer eg an upgrade to Windows 10?

Yes, there has been several Win 10 upgrades. The problems come even when I watch TV channels, not only when watching tapes. The converter is shortly very hot soon after connecting and I don't remember that it should be.

That suggests the converter is faulty.

If you look for a new one avoid the cheap and/or non branded devices and those that have an audio lead that plugs into the computer sound card. Terratec devices are very popular.

Personally I would get the latest version of the software as you are on Windows 10 - it comes with the newest Magix USB video converter, which works fine, so long as you are not trying to capture NTSC tapes on a PAL VHS recorder that supports playback of NTSC.
