I know that if a computer gets old and needs replacing, people often thinks they can just reload old programs and expect them to work again, and for the most part, most programs do work again including a lot of audio editors, but video editing and especially the games side of things develops much quicker with ever increasing demands on the operating systems and graphics due to ever more complex camera and game demands. That in turn means changes to things like Direct X and internet security protocols that the old programs do not have within their coding. Those programs either can't connect to servers to establish ownership authentication or use the new coding of driver updates or operating systems. I think your version of the program came out around 2015/16. Windows 7 at that point was still on a lot of machines back then. The lifespan of a program can be thought of as ending with the operating system it was made for ends support. If it can still be made to work I would think of it as a bonus.

Hi.

If you are importing a file from a new camera or phone it could be the old program does not have the correct codec or wrapper to use the file. For that you may have to await the reply from Magix. The program is older than my time on the forums so I have no clue as to what is going on but I have never heard of this behaviour on their other programs. Have you tried importing an old file from an old project to test that it happens even with old video files?

The other reason could be the lack of support to read the newer fire-wire port drivers. I honestly don't know at this point.

Johnny, Firewire and the DV codec is pretty basic stuff and unless VideoEasy itself won't run on Win 10 (I'd be surprised if it didn't), the issue will be elsewhere.

Could we have some more details about your new "digital camera". What is it's make and model?

Could you post a screenshot of any error message VideoEasy or Windows generates. You can add them to the forum using the blue "UP" arrow icon next to the Smiley button at the top of the Reply box.

As far as I can make out Microsoft never had drivers. It was up to each manufacturer to update their drivers.

Ray, There are no "manufacturer's" Firewire drivers. I suspect that Dell was sending out the MS Legacy driver for users to install on their Dell "optimised Windows" PC. There is currently only two FW drivers, both Microsoft-supplied: the legacy driver and the inbuilt driver in Win 11. Yes, Win 11 runs Firewire quite happily "out of the box".

I did read a few of those pages and largely, people don't know what they are talking about. For example: "I can find no IEE 1394 Host Controller in my system, and for that reason, or so it seems, I cannot connect a Sony Hi8 video camera -- as I used to be able to do, with joy, with earlier versions of Windows." AFAIK, there has never been a Hi8 camera with a Firewire capability.

Let's wait for more info from Johnny.

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Is the Firewire device a Firewire PCI/PCIe card installed in the computer, or a Firewire to USB converter if so what make and model?

What is the make and model of the video camera?

This is true, however it needs qualifying, the IEEE1394 legacy support has been dropped, this means the old drivers - 32 bit (?) for older devices are no longer available.

Windows 10 and 11 have been dropping 32 bit support . They do, however, have IEEE 1394 drivers (64 bit ?) built in so any PCI and PCIE Firewire cards should still work, unless they cards required manufacturer specific drivers.

I don't believe there are such things as 32bit and 64bit Firewire devices. There are different Firewire drivers for 32 or 64 bit Win8/8.1 (Ray's link) but there are no separate legacy drivers for Win 10, and Win 11 (64 bit only, of course) has native FW support for the "old" stuff.

Certainly, there would be no 64bit DV cameras about and all the "old 32bit" cameras work fine as long as the OS supports FW.

Thanks for the video clip, the pop-up is the original that was included with the program when you originally purchased it.

It looks like you have 2 problems:

What I do not see is the 'Do not show again' option, which makes me suspect that the pop-up is coming from an accessory program which may have been installed, and which you can uninstall.

The program is known by several different names which are, starting with the oldest:

- Network Sync
- Connect
- Magix Connect
- Update Notifier
- Magix Cloud Import

Do make sure it is the Magix one before uninstalling, there may be others with similar name.
 

Connecting to the FireWire device

Check that the 2 settings Let desktop apps access your .... in Windows settings, Privacy, Camera and Microphone options are turned on.

The FireWire devices may not be, it is the drivers that connect the device to Windows that are 'critical'.

Well done! Where there's a will there's a way. Unfortunately, Magix doesn't do a good job/can't be bothered fixing up these types of glitches.

Given your version has now been replaced (I have Video Easy 7 and your prompt to upgrade doesn't come up om V7), you're probably not going to get it fixed, so you'll have to stick with your workaround.

The programs John mentioned to delete/uninstall:

- Connect

- Magix Cloud Import

- Magix Connect

- Network Sync

- Update Notifier

Will be in the list of installed apps, if they are there at all. Just make sure they are from Magix.
