Lost tracks in MMM 17

I have been recording books in Magix Music Maker 17 with multiple tracks in each file.

I just discovered when I loaded a particular file, I get a pop up error message... "wave file defective!"   I click OK (the only option I have except to close it).  I then get another popup that says "file not found"...

The file
'E:\Magix Recording\New004.WAV'
associated with the arrangement was not found

If this file is on a removable disc, place the disc in the appropriate drive and press 'Retry'.
If the file has been moved, please select 'Directory' and enter the current position of the file.
Note:  If you skip loading this file, the resulting arrangement may contain errors.

(1 of 3 files have currently been loaded)

Choose either:
Retry           Skip       Skip all      Directory       Cancel

When I choose Directory, "New004" appears as the File Name with an option to "Open" or "cancel".  I choose "Open" and the screen loops back to the above error message.

If I hook up the removable disc and hit "Retry" the screen keeps looping back to the error message above.

My questions are -
1) Is there a way to retrieve my original recordings (including all tracks) for my various files???
2) What is causing this?
3) And how can I keep it from happening in the future?

Outside the program, have you verified that the file it is looking for is in fact in the directory?

If you move any file that is associated to a project and try to use that project again, it cannot locate the files that were included to the project. Another thing to remember when using a portable drive or thumb drive is that when you insert that drive into the computer, Windows assigns it a drive letter. It may not be the same drive letter each time its used (based on if you have other devices connected) so this alone could alter the pathway needed to use the file.

What I suggest is that you make one folder where ALL the files that are associated to the project, including the project file itself are stored. If this can be a fixed drive, that would be best.

Once you have your project setup and you are ready to save, go to the drop down menu 'File' then to the 'Backup Disc' section. There is an area there that allows you to save the project arrangement and all associated files into one location. This way, even if your original material used in the project came from different sources or locations, it can be saved into one location.

I am not sure if this helps with your current project. I think if you have located outside the program the correct file, then maybe opening the project minus this one file, then re-inserting that file from the found location, set it up again the way it was and save the project as I described above, you might not have that issue again.

You can also look to see if you can find the .bak file that has the same name as the project, but if anything was moved previously, I think the same error would occur.
