@clement5 Hi, do you mean an on screen counter or a file timecode? Which software are you using?

johnebaker wrote on 6/30/2023, 2:31 AM

@clement5

Hi

There are several 'timecode' counters available under Templates, Title templates, Timecode Basic.

I would suggest you play with them adjusting the position and left end for the counter start time, the right end for the end time to see how they work.

I want a time code to appear in the actual video as it plays. I looked at the templates and didn't see something like that. That would be in the editing part of Movie 2023 Studio. I looked around for a plugin, but didn't find one. The VirtualDub plugins might have one, but it would most likely be 32 bit and MS is 64 bit.

Hi,

I don't understand. The time code cannot be embedded in your original video. It doesn't work that way. It will be embedded in your exported video.

Time code is like a title; it's overlaid on whatever is on the timeline.

Could you explain in more detail what you mean?

Yes, I realized after I had posted that the template suggestion would work just fine, and of course would be in the exported video. OK, I learned to look in another place for stuff I want, but the "Yellow" templates have unreadable text! I am creating a ghost tester for 3D devices with a 10s video and the figure of merit being the time at which the ghost images match the changing test images. Since some display programs don't have a time counter I need an internal one in the video.

Hi

. . . . but the "Yellow" templates have unreadable text!  . . . .

Is this what you are doing - the example is as I detailed previously.

I found the Recording Date Timecode template works great if you drop it down below the video. It can be easily moved around the screen and resized. I would like to know if the format of the date can be changed, to something like 12/17/2006, as it shows the date windows (in the US anyway). And, I would like to find out if the date background on the video can be transparent, so the date is visible but none of the rest of the video is blocked by the timecode. Anyone know 1. Can the date format be changed 2. Can the date be shown with the numbers only without background blocking the video?

@TedM07

Hi

. . . . I would like to find out if the date background on the video can be transparent . . . .

Apply Chromakey black to the date object on the timeline.

Do be aware that you cannot change the colour of the counters so they may 'disappear' on light backgrounds.

When this occurs I add a black image to appear behind the timecode resize it as required and reduce the level, using the centre handle that appears when the mouse os over the time code object, ie make it more transparent as shown in the example below.

The format cannot be changed.

@TedM07

You could use the transparent Time code and a separate Text box in front or behind the time code using the size position rotation effect to adjust the size and positions of both. It would have to be in white as John says but no need to use green screen effect to have a clear background. If the date is brighter than the time code you can pull down the transparency.

That way you can also add month day year.

Thank you John EB and Ray for the help. I really appreciate it. To bad the date format cannot be changed, but I will take a win that the two of you pointed out for me!!!

Thank you,

@TedM07

Hi, for most of my vids the Rec Date & time doesn't work as expected, don't know why but that doesn't matter,

Try adding Rec Date & time then right click on it - 'Fade in date as title', drag that new one below & you can delete the orig Rec Date & time,, the colour & font can then be changed,

Timecode - use Mix instead of Black box in the Chroma options, you can then use the Color Correction to change the text colour. In this vid I just left the background transparent but if you choose Background or Foreground you can change the background colour as well as the text colour.

Movie Time Transparent - Timecode doesn't need Chromakey, just apply it & use Color Correction to change the text colour.

-------

PS, changing the Chroma key to Black after changing the colour with Color Correction makes the colour stronger.

I have tried Gid's solution and it works well. You can have pretty much whatever you want at any size / date / position / colour combination you wish.

Hi

@Former user, good catch.

I interpreted 'Recording Date Timecode' as referring to one of the dynamic timecodes, which cannot be changed.

Using the 'Fade in as title' option on the dynamic timecodes they become static.

Thank you Gid, Ray, and John for your help and weighing in on how to make this work. I ran out of time tonight to get it tested but I will get to it tomorrow evening so I can let you know how it goes. I so appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions. I am looking forward to getting it setup so I can convert my 135 hours of video with date of when the video was taken included in them.
