instrument recording, please help

when i begin to record, everything is fine. but when i play back what i just recorded, the volume slowly lessens until i have zero sound. i tried to record in chunks but it makes my guitar sound out of quality. i am using a mixer and stereo cables to allow my computer to recognize it through the mic. can anyone help me? thanx

This is strange behaviour! Let's start with a couple of things:
Are you using the MIC input of a sound card? At least use the Line in or better yet get a recording interface. The MIC input is designed only for PC mics and it's set at a nonstandard gain level - this can easily be overloaded with a mixer if the levels are too hot.
Have you tried this with a fresh track/new arrangement? Perhaps you have the fade activated.

Do you have a line-in available to you? Perhaps on the back of your PC right off the sound card? It's a long shot but worth a try; it's going to give you a cleaner recording anyway.
I can't think of anything that would cause this.
