I need to delete some VST files and install new ones in Samplitude Music Studio 2014

tejasmed wrote on 3/14/2014, 2:06 AM

I have had to re install Samplitude Music Studio 2014  at least 10 times due to problems in my computer balking and giving me blue screen.

Finally cleaned up system.  Now, I have trouble trying to get my library of  personal VST files I had in VST file to load.

Some times after a re install, I can maybe get two to load.

The   file that says  Browse VST files, only looks at the file.  The file that says re scan the VST file, does nothing.Mainly they just ignore any commands.

Sometimes I have duplicates and  used one previous  forum post to find the file that has all the VST items in it and deleted all that I could find.   Still  some came up with even duplicate files.

If there is a VST file that Samplitude MS  does not like, it just hangs up the program and only Task Manager can shut SMS down.  I cannot even delete the VST files that hang the program up.

I really think that Samplitude MM would suit all my midi and audio needs, But, I have spent a week or so testing before making the purchasing investment, and have only had one set back after another with  computer and VST settings.

I mention that I have had Reaper in system...and it loads and uses every one of the VST files I have tried to use so far.    Ease of  tweaking  SMM  is not quite there.   Any thing I have not tried besides dumping files out of  C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2014\VstPlugins  ?   Or what and where else to do and go?

I admire your  honesty in telling us your issues, because, sadly you have quite a few.  Everytime your computer crashes there is never any real way to know how good the recovery was....What was open and running ?  Were you on  line ? You think you do all the right things to save your data and programs, but the reality is you would have to check almost everyone you have by itself....2 weeks goes by and everything still appears to be OK, so you open some programyou haven't used for a while , and guess what ?  Its screwed up.  Every crash is bad mojo and you have had more than your fair share.  You probably have a trashed hard drive....do you know how to defragment it ?

I would gues you have bits and pieces of Magix scattered all over the place and yu need to delete ALL of the files and do a redownload from Magix.....hopefully Johnebaker will wave his magix wand and respond to you, he knows Magix and is also computer savy.......thought about getting a new one ?

Gnarly:

Thanks for response.  For starters, I had no luck at first with Norton Power Eraser.  Then out of the blue, the signal popped up for me to download Norton un install. (theirs) So it un installed all of Norton...Stuff I never knew was in there ....and I got a complete new down load from Norton.  Suddenly, all things cleared up ...So, I went to great lengths to use IO 7 really powerful un installer and totally took out  an remains of Reaper, and Samplitude MS. Then I re installed Samplitude MS ....As mentioned, I had a nice collection of  VST files that work great when installed in Reaper.  Still in the program files  VST folder.    When trying to create a MIDI track, and trying to open and use a VST  instrument to play,  Samplitude has all of the stuff installed from Samplitude...but  when you click the inverted triangle on upper right of track, it brings up list...Select MIDI Instrument Presets second bock comes up and at bottom is New Instrument.   Click that and you get at top, the Samplitude choices, but at the bottom you  Should get a long list of VST inst and files that were in your Computer VST file.   At present, it only sees one or two.

Now, go to top of program and click on Play/Record    scroll down and just pick  Playback Options. Window open up.  Scroll down and pick VST/DirectX /ReWire . Opens up new window.

Look at  VST Plugins........Use System VST folder   Browse VST Folder  Re Scan  Selected  VST folder,   then last ,Re scan Selected VST folder including failed plug ins.

Now, you can  use the first two to check on your C drive program VST...but doesn't really do much... The other two are either useless or broke and do nothing.

As mentioned, there is that file I listed in previous post  C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2014\VstPlugins  You can find references to the files,  but even deleating the unwanted ones in this file still do not seem to get rid of  all the non usalbe ones.

Remember... say I have 4  VST files  that did load into the available slot.   Well,  say two of those worked flawlessly in Reaper, but they do not work in Samplitude for what ever reason.  Should you try to load a bad file, it locks up the program totally and you have to use Task master to get the whole program to shut down no other way out.   So, you need to make a note and try to find a way to move them over to another file away for what ever Samplitude looks at.   But...there are still a lot more VST files that need to load,  and will not.

Only theory I can give is maybe in the trial version there is a block that only a very limited amout of VST files can be loaded.

Plan to purchase a key as soon as I can get  tech service to give me some solid answers why I am having so much trouble making the system work.   I really like the layout of Samplitude.  But, there are a lot of features I am just scraping the surface on ...an a huge learning curve to fight.

Just a little point...I am old enough that I buitl the earliest of the computers starting with Ham gear attached to Tandy units.  Neat how you can collect all your parts and build your super computer.   This was my 5th one...but yes, I know...the board is 6 years old now and time to start savings for  the next super mother board.

My basic use in the past was mostly graphics and photo stuff...now I am trying to work on audio for recording and use for  video  streaming.    Glad for any help from those that have already had experience in the Samplitude MS...helps with that daunting learning curve.

Hope someone can make the program simpler or fix the bug that prevents you from loading personal files and deleting the ones that balk .

Thanks.   Donn

Hi

@ Gnarly - do I get commission ?

@ tejasmed - Gnarly is correct when saying . . . .thought about getting a new one . . .

IMHO if all the majority of the components, especially the hard drive and memory, are  6 years old the computer should pensioned off.

It is likely that your problems are coming from the beginnings of hardware failure - in particular the hard drive if it has been well used, the surface may be beginning to break up and no amount of defragging will fix it, also memory chips may be strting to deteriorate.

On the software side I would try turning off Norton while re-installing the software - make sure you are disconnected from the Internet if possible.

HTH

In my 7 or 8 yeaars of Magix involvement, I have never seen such a lenghty reply on any subject....just looking at the sheer volume has told me......DUDE, you need and deserve a new PC.  You will not believe how much better your life will become....food will taste better, you'll sleep thru the night...all sorts of good things.

tejasmed wrote on 3/15/2014, 8:15 PM

Thanks for the replies.  Seems like most were just to tell me to get a new computer.  Well, that will be done in time. Mean while,  the system is working, and I am trying to learn the program. Went ahead and purchased a key. But,  no difference in the extra files.

What I have found so far, is that you need to have a full and clean VST file available in  program files before you install the  program.

After going through the manual and doing tests, the program is not forgiving about what it wants to use for VST files.  And....does a weird job of dispirsing them among different files.   Once they are in the program, there does not seem to be a way to get them out, unless you know where they are and how to delete them.  That was mostly what I was wanting help for.  Seems that someone from tech would put some controls where you can easily put in and remove files. Plus have a way to let the program isolate a bad VST file ....say so...and not slam the program shut. But allow you to delete the bad file and continue on with the work.

So, I guess I have done my own home work for now... and hoping  I get an answer from a tech that is willing to either tell me what I am not seeing,  or  take the suggestions to fix or improve the problems I  am having.

Well guys,  the newbie really killed the crow this time.

In order to try to clean up the mess of all the VSTs, I  tried to do an un install  of Samplitude MS.

It balked, with a very good professional uninstaller  (IO uninstaller)   and no amount of cleaning registry would allow a new clean install.

The setup stops now   Unelevated process could not be created

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. (123)

                                          MusicStudio,exe

Checked the registry at least 5 times and no MusicStudio  or traces of Samplitude exist.

Plus  I tried  Magix cleaner,  but it only found my  Video program.

Eventually the techs will find time to contact me.

Laugh all you want...this will get fixed eventually.

Hi

My preferred options to fix this in descending order of practicality and increasing difficulty are

   1.   Restore the hard drive from a backup image (if you have one)

   2.   Reformat the hard drive re-install Windows and all your software - then I would use a program like Clonezilla to backup the hard drive to an image

   3.   Manually remove every single vestige of the program ie registry entries, installation scripts/manifests etc.

As an absolute last resort use an uninstaller that has not monitored the installation and collected data on the installation.

My answer is still the best !!!!  I would suspect that yu have shot yourself in the foot so many times that you went down in shoe size.  We aaren't laughing at you, we feel your pain....and its past my threshold.  When johnebaker stops talking Magix and goes into computer guru mode...it is time to throw in the towel.  I will follow your posts in hope that everytthing eventually works out for you, and I am trully sorry you have these types of issues.  I will fold my tent and go silently into the good night.

tejasmed wrote on 3/17/2014, 9:11 PM

Well Gnarly, you are probably right.  But I took John's suggestion and did a computer set back...all the way to January.  I also did a regedit and cleaned out every piece of  Samplitude.  In doing so, it ruined my MAGIX  Video 17 and luckily I was able to re install it.  Just to see if things were ok with MAGIX, I downloaded the trial for  Music Maker. It had no problems. I ran Power eraser twice, and  ran Norton full system scan twice.  Cleaned some deep cookies out in process.  :-) .

Interesting thing, I used two different  uninstallers to try to get all the stuff out of the computer.  Even the registry was clean.

Since I had trouble with MAGIX Movie 17,  I had to use the un installer I had. Cleaned it all out. But, when I tried to load the program, It decided it needed to do another un install for itself...Still found almost the whole program and uninstalled it before re installing with no problem.   What ever they  write code for, they plant it deep, and hide it all over the computer.

But, even with all that searching and cleaning,  Samplitude will not load.  Still crashes giving some weird banner or still looking for a Folder and an .exe  that never existed.

Too bad....paid for the key...  now can't use it unless tech support can come up with a fix.

After playing with  the Music Maker again for a bit,  they have a window where you can set a place to get VST files, or  go into your computer find the VST file and delete the ones that are not needed, then tell the program to purge and re install all VST from the new file you indicate.   A little better.  But, they have not solved the problem that if  one of the files you wanted to load is not liked by the program, then the  both Music Maker and Samplitude will lock up and nothing will bring it down except  Task Master.   Should be something in there to allow you to just say  OK  ignore this file, choose another one.

Right now, once a file gets loaded into the programs, they want to stay there...usually in another hidden file that you cannot find to delete them.

Hope it does get fixed....I really like the idea of being able to  listen to the effects on earphones and be able to record at the same time.   Still would like to work on being able to load and play several VST instruments at the same time and play them all with the same keyboard at the same time,  as I can in Reaper.    Get some really strange mixes that way.   I  like the Samplitude interface a lot better, and seems easier to navigate.  So, until things get fixed,  will get back to workshop and make some more flutes and stuff.   Regards and thanks.

tejasmed wrote on 3/20/2014, 7:53 PM

The final decision after reply from  Tech support is that I will have to completely wipe my drive and re install Windows and all my files.  Stuff is wormed into parts unseen in the registry.

So,  for the time being, I have purchased a new drive and will re install the system.

I still wish that the programmers would fix the access and the ability to delete VST files. And make it so that if a  VST file is not  accepted by the program, instead of hanging the program up so bad you have to use Task Manager to pull it down....but make it so it tells you to cancel the request and find another one that works.

Fix what is a bug and broke and let's get on with progress.

Thanks....

Former user wrote on 3/22/2014, 6:47 PM

Did you ever defrag your drive on a regular basis ?  Pllease let us know if a new drive is the answer...if your drive was bad I would suspect all of your programs would be honked up....were they ?  I smell a rat !

tejasmed wrote on 3/22/2014, 7:13 PM

Gnarly:

I had to purchase a new hard drive, and after putting it in, and re installing Win 7 ultimate back into the system, along with other programs, including my MAGIX  movie 17,  The system is stable.

I loaded the Samplitude in and it went in ok.

Rather than jump right in, I am going to test that file of VSTs I have over on Reaper just to find the ones that are known to hang up the programs, and  move them over to another file.  Eventually getting a clean file of usable VSTs.   Samplitude still has a mean streak of  not liking several instruments and it will severely lock up the program and as noted, only Task Master will bring it down.

In answer about the  defrag question.  that program I have  System care 7  IOBit  is run usually two or more times a day. And for sure when I shut the system down at night.  It not only searches for all the malware, but defrags the registry and pulls the bad stuff out.  Finds bad links and  fixes them.. plus several other neat services.  And last goes through and  defrags the  whole drive.  So, the drive has been defraged usually twice a day.

But,  some of the malware that does get into the system is pretty tough.   Even when installing MAGIX, you get that nasty  bloat ware that wants you to  buy a tool to check your downloads.  Just takes up room and annoys you until you either delete it or buy the program.   The IOBit has a super tough uninstaller that goes back into the registry when you do the first clean, and finds all the stuff.  There is a whole page of registry stuff that is left in your computer that would stay there forever if you did not know how to clean it out.   That is the junk that eventually locks up your system.

So,  thanks for all the suggestions....we are back on track...but as mentioned,  would sure wish the programmers would do a better job on the ease of use of the VST file in and out.

All the Best.
