I bought a Zoom R16. Can I get it to work as a surface controller?

I bought a Zoom R16, and after installing the Zoom driver I got it to work as an audio interface in Acid Pro 10

I'd like to be able to use the transport controls (especially for punching in and out), but I'm not sure of how to set it up. I tried going through the External controller tab and adding the Mackie setting, but Acid is telling me that there's no MIDI device present. I'm running the R16 via USB (it doesn't have MIDI ports), so I'm mystified as to how to get it working.

Are detailed instructions available for setting up and external USB controller, or am I out of luck here? Thnks for any help you can give.

Update: I got past the MIDI roadblock by turning of MIDI settings for the R16, but now I'm trying to assign functions to the faders and transport on the R16 and not getting anywhere.

Any suggestions? Anyone?
