How to resize an object.

Murph wrote on 3/27/2020, 1:49 AM

This is going to sound a little crazy. But, how do you resize an object?

I have watched a few tutorial videos showing that if I select a corner node I can drag to resize. When I try this it just moves the object. If I hold Alt and drag it resizes but is destructive and does not constrain.

I am a design and web professional of many years. I feel like I am missing something here.

Thanks for your help.

@Murph

Hi

Ensure the the object to be resized is selected, as you hover the mouse over the object handles you will see the mouse pointer changes to a double headed arrow - see image below for examples of the mouse pointer and the direction they move the handles.

It is while this arrow is displayed that you click and drag the object to resize it.

Hi John

This does not seem to work for me.

@Murph

Hi

From the video clip it looks like you are not in the scaling mode as shown below

Also check that there are no multiple copies of the same text box - I accidentally created several copies of the text box when testing various mouse and key combinations.

Hi John

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Here is another video. I followed your steps but I don't get the same results.

@Murph

Hi

Thanks for the second clip - the problem looks like the Scale aspect ratio lock is not on

Also when you right click ensure that both options, Aspect ratio lock and Smart transform are turned on.

I can't seem to resize without constraints. I have a weekly PDF that I have rasterized and need to make it "fatter" I unlock the constraint lock, but I still only get either the frame resized or the inside picture part gets cropped inside.

@Kelley-Kuhlman

Hi

. . . . I have a weekly PDF that I have rasterized and need to make it "fatter". . . .

Once you have unlock all the constraints listed above then the image should be fully adjustable without maintaining the fixed aspect ratio, however this is going to make the text fatter and may cause issues with readers who have visual impairments.

Is there a reason why you cannot just use the PDF file and let users download it to read it? They can adjust the view size to suit any visual impairments they have.

Hello and thank you. I do try to keep the distortion to a minimum but when I do the "non-constraint" it is for the older folks who don't have the internet, and it makes it a bit bigger for them. However, I am still not able to get it to work. I seem unable to upload a video. So I will attach an image. To clarify, I am unable to stretch the image width wise only.

@Kelley-Kuhlman

Hi

Did you try turning off the Aspect ratio lock and Smart transform settings?

Yes, if what I showed above is all turned off as in that neither of them are selected. The attached below shows them "pushed" in or selected. The above image shows them off, and I still cannot get the image to resize only width.

Hi

The Aspect ratio lock and Smart transform settings are only visible when you right click the Lock Aspect Ratio button that the left arrow in you image above is pointing to.

Well, smart transform was ticked, I deselected, but it still didn't work. However, I was able to set the width to a desired amount, and it worked. Thanks!
