How to move a project (incl. update the media file locations)?

Matt-Braun wrote on 8/26/2022, 6:27 AM

Sorry for yet another question in short order.

This seems to be an obvious task: move a finished project, including media files, to another drive. It seems like the source files are stored with absolute paths though. It also doesn't seem to make a difference if I select "copy media to project folder" which even states it's used for later moving the project.

So how would one move a VPX project or change the drive letter?

Hi Matt.

If you are using VPX internally to move files via the "Copy media to project folder" Then it does work

You just have to remember to go to that folder and open the project file from that location. Using the opening screen instead doesn't work because you have created a backup folder, not a current working project folder.

Thank you! That's a bit of a strange solution I gotta say (from a software engineering point of view) but it works.

Hi

In addition to @CubeAce comment

When using the option "copy media to project folder" this will only copy the media you have used in the project.

Unused media for the same project, ie that which was never imported into the project folder will not be copied - if you ever need to go back to the project to add the spare unused media then manually add the media from the media pool to the project folder pane using drag and drop or select the media then use the "Load selected media files in to the project folder . . . . ." button, before moving the project.

Caveat: this works for Movie Edit Pro, so should work for VPX.

Matt, if all you are doing is changing a drive letter with all files still in the same relative locations on that drive, try simply opening the MVP on the "new" drive using File>Open....

VPX will protest that it can't locate the first media file it tries to load. Just browse to the file it can't find and select it. VPX may then ask you again, but the second time around, the new location should register, and all following files will be loaded without issue. Make sure you then do a Save to save the "new" file locations.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
