I have just started using Movie Studio 2024 so I may be asking an obvious question. I am trying to fade the audio on a video clip. I have added a fade out transition at the end of the clip and the picture fades to black but the audio ends abruptly. Any suggestions?

Right click the video and select Audio functions, Video/audio on seperate tracks the audio can then be adjusted easily.
I would suggest in Program settings, Video/audio tab, the option Video/audio on one track is unchecked, video will then import with the audio on a separate track which makes editing easier.

Hi,
For any clips already on the timeline that don't have Audio Video on separate tracks, select the clip, shortcut Ctrl+H.
You can also use a volume curve.

To add to the two John's comments.
Once you have separated the sound from video onto two tracks you may then need to make them independent of each other by pressing the broken chain link in the tools section of the timeline editor or you may find when you fade one you fade the other at the same time. You may want one to fade before or after the other.
Once separated do be careful not to move either clip again or the sound will go out of sync with the video clip. Once you have it as you want it you can combine both clips again by holding down Ctrl and clicking on both the sound and video clips and then clicking on the unbroken chain icon.(We call all such clips objects). Then both should stay in sync and can be freely moved around.

Ooops, I missed the essential point. No need to ungroup the audio from the video. Simply hold down Alt and drag the fade handle of the audio part. It will move separate from the video, and vice versa.
The same applies if you want make J and L-cuts, hold down Alt and drag the end. All is shown in my videos IIRC.

I've just had a look at Fade Thru Black and the audio looks like it's faded as well:
What are you seeing on your timeline?
Re adjusting the audio, assuming you have the video and audio on separate tracks, to adjust the audio object (it's end position and also the fade), hold down the ALT key (edit: as per JohnCB/s comment; he beat me to it 😉). The video object will not be affected but will stay grouped.
Ray, I think it would be better to simply use the term "ungrouped" and "grouped". They are, after all, the terms the program uses.

Agreed, though I feel some clarification may be in order.
Putting the video/audio on seperate tracks using right click method or Ctrl+H - the video and audio remain grouped, and move, together when dragged on the timeline.
Ungrouping - the video and audio become detached from each other and can be moved independantly on the timeline. Additionally one or the other can removed completely, eg to use the audio part of one video clip with a different video clip.
I do this often, particulalry when a recorded a outdoor scene has some one nearby talking during recording, I replace the sudio from another clip that has similar background sounds.

Thanks everyone. I moved the audio onto another track and faded it that way. Worked like a charm.
