how to capture video

I just purchased a new video cam and it dont have a firewire output. It has either usb or hdmi. I cant figure out how to preview and capture video without the firewire. Can you help me? My software is Vegas 10 and My computer is a PC with XP OS. It always worked with my old camera that had a firewire output.

Thank you.

USB should do the job. You will need a cable with the appropriate type of plug at the camera end. The camera (turned on) will appear in your Windows Explorer window just like any other USB device like a memory stick or external hard drive.

Exactly how things are arranged will depend on your camera. The shot above is with my Sony A7; by comparison my mobile phone shows top level folders for 'Phone' and 'SD card' and .mp4 clips taken with the camera are in 'Pictures > Camera Roll'. (The 'Video' folder is only for clips I've downloaded to the phone!) Your camera manual should have this information.

Make sure you copy from camera to PC! MEP will no doubt prompt you, otherwise there will be speed of access problems and you would need to have your camera connected every time you want to edit your material.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Carl

Thank you but I think we are talking about two different things. My question concerns capturing live video. On the preview page I have no problem of seeing the preview but the problem occurs when I start recording live video the image that my camera sees goes away and I can not preview when recording. I have read other peoples posts and they have the same problem They say it is some problem with fire wire vs usb. I was hoping you would have the answer. I love my Vegas software and have no problem of capturing video that has already been recorded but I would like to capture live video and be able to preview as I record. It works fine with my old Canon camera but it has a firewire output.

John, I don't think you can. I really am not sure why, but it seems that real-time transfer from camera to computer of "live" (as it happens) footage is not possible with USB, presumably because the data transfer rate is just not fast enough. Perhaps USB3 would allow it, given its higher speed?

All the above is speculation on my part; I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi

. . . . My question concerns capturing live video . . . .

It would help if we had more information eg camera make and model and why you need to capture live as opposed to recording the action and then using the recorded video files which you can transfer to the computer via USB for editing in Vegas 10.

Live capture will required the camera to be connected to a suitable USB video converter plugged into the computer and if you require high quality video eg Full HD - 1920 * 1080 - this is not the best way to go.
