How do I speed up Photostory 2023?

Simont1952 wrote on 1/14/2023, 8:04 AM

I think I will like this product, but only if it can be more responsive. I suffer lags and delays in just about every area of operation.

My PC has 4 i7 Cores at 4GHz and 32Gb RAM. My C drive is an SSD and the data is on a 2TB HDD.

The software version is 22.0.3.146.

Is there something I have not got configured correctly? My trial is creating a 200 photo story.

With my previous software (Muvee Reveal 2018) I never suffered this. I am only changing because following recent Windows updates, the program will no longer run.

@Simont1952

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

In order to try and help you we really need more information, please:

  1. Mention of my trial suggests you are running the Trial version of PS 2023, is that correct? Trial versions are always limited in some way compared to the full, purchased version but this limitation is usually to do with additional facilities and features and not the core program.
  2. Exactly which i7 processor do you have? Please quote exact model number. Since you don't mention a separate GPU we need to know the graphics capabilities of your processor.
  3. What format(s) and resolution of photos are you using?
  4. Can you give a step by step method to reproduce the lags and delays you experience? Are they on playback of your slideshow or when attempting other actions/changes also?
  5. If you reduce the number of images in your show does this result in any improvement?
  6. What version and build of Windows are you running?
  7. How much free space is there on your C:\ drive? The actual data may be stored on D:\ but C:\ is used extensively during program operation.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your interest

Answers as follows;

2. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz   4.00 GHz Graphics Card GeForce GTX960 2GB RAM

3. JPG images from Camera typically 5184 x 3888 (6+ MB) and phone 4000x3000 (6+ MB)

4. Simply moving around the application, selecting images to insert into timeline, moving up and down the photo timeline at the bottom of the screen and moving amongst the images in the selection window top RHS. All these actions have a delay of 5-10 seconds to them.

5. I started a new project and placed a subset of the images in there. (116 images).

6. Edition    Windows 10 Pro Version    22H2 OS build    19045.2486
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

7. 254GB free out of 413GB

Update: Having left and restarted the program to check on the smaller project, the program is now more responsive. I will keep watching. Now to explore titles and adding animation to the output.

I am searching for a way to add Ken Burns style effects in all images at once. To go through each image individually and add such would be too time consuming. I have already discovered the way to add random transitions.

@Simont1952

Thanks for the additional information.

Couple of things strike me:

  1. Your CPU is now quite "old" (sorry!) and its built-in graphics are HD4600. Are its drivers fully up to date (this page lists the latest released ones)? Don't depend on Windows Update to ensure fully updated drivers. Your images are, technically, UHD size, which is above what your CPU can "officially" handle, I think.
  2. Similar comment for your NVidia GPU (sorry again!). Its latest drivers can be found here.
  3. To apply a specific transition effect to ALL images in a show, select the transition between the first and second slides in your show by right-clicking on the small (yellow/blue) box at the lower left corner of the image (I'm assuming you're using the timeline view). From the dropdown list that appears choose "Apply to all objects in the track". Or, if you are not wanting the effect to be all the way through but rather to start later in the show, choose the option to "Apply to all of the following objects in the track".
  4. For your Ken Burns effect start by looking under the fx menu at the options available there, e.g., the Movement Templates. But do remember, if you are running the trial version many of the fx options will not be available until you purchase and register the app, at which point a considerable quantity of Additional Content will be downloadable, including transitions and other fx.

I should add that, using similar format images and even video footage I do not see the slowdowns and lags that you experience. You can see the spec of my computer in my signature.

Hi

. . . . HD4600. Are its drivers fully up to date . . . .

Updating to the latest drivers will disable what little hardware acceleration can be done by the HD4600 - see this Intel article.

I update drivers all the time and have made the Nvidia GPU the standard card to be used.

I am considering updating my PC. I have looked at my supplier and see how cost effective things are now, but am surprised that my PC struggles that much.

Hi

. . . . am surprised that my PC struggles that much. . . .

At the release date of the i7-4790K processor, 2014, this was at the forefront of hardware technologies and performance, however there have been ever rapid increases in hardware performance, features and capabilities which software manufacturers, and end users, want to take advantage of.

This in turn this leads to higher System requirements and can result in modern software running with poorer performance on older hardware which does not have the features and capabilities required.

Having trialled this program I have decided to look elsewhere. It has many more features than I need and would require that investment in a new PC which will happen in the next 12 month anyway.

I have decided to go with SmartShow 3D. It allows fairly rapid development of a movie after the initial learning curve and produces the final movie promptly without overwhelming my current PC.

I was seeking an alternative to Muvee Reveal which I have used for over 10 years, but which stopped loading after a recent Windows 10 upgrade and the support appears to have gone.

Thanks for all your support and help, but "german logic" has beaten me with this project.
