How do I make Panoramic images spin

LouiseI wrote on 2/15/2016, 6:18 AM

I have 360 panoramas I've created, (jpg files, one long image)  - how do I get Photostory to recognize them as that and spin them.  Even when I select them as panoramas Photostory will not spin them.

I've tried creating them in Photostory but mine require 12 images and not the 6 image max of Photostory.  Photostory suggests using Panorma Weaver to stitch ones with more than 6 images which I tried but I still can't see how to get them to spin in  Photostory.

Any help appreciated - thanks!

Hi Louise,

Spin? Like a propeller? Or pan across the image from left to right? First case requires Effects, rotation and keyframes. Second case requires Effects, size position and keyframes starting with the left part of the image in monitor at time x and then another keyframe with the right side of the image showing at time y. Look up keyframing in the manual, and panning. Let us know if you need more help.

Thanks John -- I was hoping that Photostory could display them in the round -- it allows for 6 images to be stitched together but not the 12 I need to make the full 360.  Spin - as in, imagine you were standing in the middle of an image that wrapped right around you and slowly rotated around you.

I don't think Photostory can do this.  I will take a look at keyframing and panning though - thanks!

Hi Louise,

Ok, I see what you're talking about. You didn't indicate which version of PhotoStory that you're using, so I have to assume that it's 2016 and it includes the new 360° panorama feature. I have this in MEP2016 Plus/Premium. Once you have the panorama on the timeline (not storyboard), increase the length to about 20s or more or you'll get dizzy. Click on the object. Click on the Effects tab and look for Video effects, then 360° Panorama or something like that.

Unless you have a 360° image from a Ricoh camera, under Panorama, open the pop-down and select user-defined (or something like that, as the manual for MEP isn't even correct). Assuming that your pan stitching goes all the way around, leave the recording angle as 360. Under perspective, the default is probably 120; I used 65 to get a larger image on the screen.

Place the playback marker at the beginning. In the Media pool, at the bottom, there should be some keyframing lines. Click on the + to set a keyframe. Move the playback marker over to about 18s, then drag the middle direction of marker clockwise if that is the direction that you want, until it reaches 360, or simply type 360 into the box. This should set a second keyframe at 18s. Try scrubbing along the timeline to see if this is what you want. Experiment with other settings and timing.

Below is a quick effort on showing a 360 degree rotation using MEP2016 Premium. I added a couple of things. At 18s there is a kf for 360°. At 20s, I modified the perspective to 35 so that the image stops at 18s and starts to zoom in to close to full screen. I also added in Bezier interpolation which makes the effect start slowly, speed up, then slow down. I need to adjust this curve on the timeline and adjust the overall length because it spins or pans too fast.

I will make a video of what iI did and post it, probably tomorrow. This is neat. I wanted to do this in a video that I am putting together, but I simply used a pan across the image. This is more interesting.

Below is a screen shot of the settings and keyframes (kf).

If you still have trouble, post some screen shots of what you have, including the 360degree screen.

THANK YOU!!!  YES!  That is exactly what I was trying to achieve :)  I'll try and get some time this afternoon to try this out but I think you just solved my problem :D  I really appreciate the time you've taken to explain this.  My pans won't be as pretty as they are interior ones of rooms - is  yours Snowdonia?  Lake District?  Scotland? (I'm originally from the South West, now living in Ontario.

Thank you John -- I've tried it with success!  The whole program is new to me and I'm not sure I would have managed this without your help.  Very much appreciated :)
