how can I record piano keyboard music using a midi interface?

I'm using Music Maker 11 Deluxe on my dell inspiron 531, vista home premium. service pack 2, 32-bit. My keyboard is sitting right next to me and it's connected to my computer by an M-audio uno midi interface. I've been using this set-up for a couple years, but I just got a new monitor and now I can't record any more music. This has to be a coincidence, but I'd still like to know why it's not working. Here are my steps:

I plug the midi interface into the usb port and then open up the music program.

I click the record button to see my audio driver choices. I select What U Hear (SB Live 24 bit).

Then I create a midi file. At this point, I can see the piano going down the left part of the screen.

On the bottom, there's a REC button. I push it and then play a few notes on the keyboard. I then click Stop. At this point, the notes I played should appear as little red rectangles on the grid, but they don't?!?!?!? I don't know why this has all of a sudden stopped working. Does anyone know what I need to do?

On the screen, here are some of the settings that are in place: #=64T, length=#, Midi-out=no VSTi, midi chan 1, and the overdub box is checked. I never touch these settings.

Please help!! Thanks.

I can't imagine what the new monitor would have to do with it (but, we ARE taking about a computer here).

I don't believe the overdub box should be checked since you don't have anything to overdub on top of.

Also, just double check to make sure the M-Audio is still listed as the recording input device.

Hi. I unchecked the overdub box, but that didn't solve the problem. How would I check to confirm what the input recording device is? I actually got a new midi interface yesterday, but that one didn't help resolve anything either. Thanks.

On that version of MMM, I imagine you need to hit the 'Y' key to access the Program Settings.  Otherwise, simply go through the File menu.

On the Audio/MIDI tab, make sure the M-Audio Uno is chosen as the MIDI input/recording device.

I poked around and changed a few settings back and forth, based on where you suggested. I'm not exactly sure what I did, but something worked and I can record now!!!! So thanks!

If your computer speakers are plugged into a sound card (or intergrated audio interface), you need to make sure that device is selected as the audio OUTPUT device in Windows/MMM.

Also, it might help to turn the "Local" OFF on your keyboard, assuming it has that function. (You didn't bother to tell us what keyboard you're using.)

Thanks very much for your kind input, but I was able to solve the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling the program. After I couldn't get the sound to come out the computer speakers, I then couldn't do much of anything. I got a crazy Crash Guard pop-up error window the next time I tried to pull up a midi file. I saved the # of it. If you need it for anything, let me know, but as of now, everything is back to normal.
