High CPU Usage..when using effects. Preview window lags

worldstarhiphop23 wrote on 6/17/2012, 4:57 AM

I have windows 7 64 bit laptop

Intel Core i7 3920XM CPU @ 2.90 GHZ (4C 8T 3.59 ghz/ 3.8Ghz Turbo,3.6ghz IMC, 4x 256kb, L2 8MB L3)
32 GB Of DDR3 Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M (3 GB Ram)

Harddive is a Crucial M4 512 GB, Sata600 SSD

Everytime i add in one of the Magic Bullet Quick Looks effects. on a video. CPU goes very high 95 percent to 100 percent.. and the program starts to lagg. hen i press play on it.. skipping.

The video is HD Video is 1920 x 1080

Thought this new laptop would be able to handle it. Anything to do to fix this?

Short answer to your final sentence: not a lot!

Because you are using HD footage the data "throughput" to enable any NLE software to play it is very high, to say the least!  As soon as you add almost any "effect" (transition, Magic Bullet Quick Looks, etc.) you are increasing the workload on your computer because now, in addition to that already-high data rate you are asking your PC to perform a whole extra level of calculations in order to render (play/demonstrate) the effect.  I don't know which version of VPX you're running but on my PC, whose spec is considerably lower than yours, VPX4 has been the first version which enables me to play AVCHD footage natively "clean" (i.e. without stutters etc.) but the addition of transitions or other effects quickly slows it down.

But there is a solution (of sorts): you can choose to "render" the section of the footage that includes the part that is stuttering.  VPX will then prepare what is often called in other editors a "proxy" file containing ONLY the section you have selected, but, unlike more normal proxy files, it will be at the full resolution of your file.  Then, when you play the footage, when this particular section is reached, you will see the "rendered" version (with all the effects you've inserted) play just as smoothly as the remainder of your footage.

How do i choose to render?

ihave Video Pro 4..

and the video is 5 minutes long.. i wanted the whole 5 minute to have this 1 Magic Bullet Quick Looks effect

If you have VPX4 open, use Help>Index (tab), type "Preview Rendering", follow the instructions there.

When i clicked on Preview Rendering. i got this error message

The function 'MPEG-2' is not available. In order to be able to use preview rendering, please activate this function

emmrecs wrote on 6/18/2012, 1:50 PM

think that error message implies that your installation of VPX4 is not fully registered (registration seems to activate all necessary codecs.)  So are you running a fully-installed, registered version of VPX4 or are you working from a Trial version?  Though my experience is that the Trial versions function virtually as the full, paid-for equivalents, but only for a limited time.

I'm sure someone with much greater knowledge of this than me can usefully contribute (?johnebaker?) but I've just checked the MPEG-2 codec on my computer and it appears to be a generic one, of unknown manufacture!

OTOH, if you go to File>Settings>Preview rendering you will see a screen offering different types of rendering, including .avi, DV-avi, and MAGIX video.  Remembering that this process is ONLY for the purposes of enabling you to see the outcome of the effect(s) you are trying to use, I would be tempted to try the "MAGIX video" setting; at the very least the program should NOT have a problem playing its "own" format!

Thanks but yes i did puchase this.

worldstarhiphop23 wrote on 6/19/2012, 4:24 AM

Ok i found how to activate

Screenshot shows my settings. i tried the Magix setting. but it still lagged and started skipping when using Magic Bullet Effects. High CPU at 100 percent.

Only way i can fix the skipping a little bit. is if choose "Movie Display" to Low Resolution.. It plays better.. doesn't skip & lag as much. But the preview screen. of cours doesn't show the HD quality. just the low quality

worldstarhiphop23 wrote on 6/19/2012, 4:32 AM

Also Magix Support are saying it could be cause my CPU is overlocked. and thats why high CPU? is that true?. should i change it back to normal settings.. i got it from Xoticpc.. extra option to give it more boost in speed

said this.. or maybe i just need a faster computer to handle HD editing with MagicBullets. if so how much CPU power do you suggest

The Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3920XM CPU @ 2.90GHz
is overclocked or not correctly installed.

Normal speed supported is 2900 MHz.
Measured speed is 3093 MHz.

To solve this problem:
install a suitable processor or get the settings checked.

emmrecs wrote on 6/19/2012, 7:06 AM

I'm definitely no expert in the whys, wherefores and consequences of over clocking the CPU, and, as I said before my computer is a lower spec than yours (Core2 Quad Q9650 CPU @ 3GHz, Win 7 32 bit) but the small amount of overclocking I use, (on VPX Export the CPU runs at up to about 3.6GHz) certainly is NOT a problem.

However, as a very quick experiment I loaded a very short (3 second) piece of AVCHD footage to the timeline in VPX4; it played without problem at Full Resolution.  Adding a MagicBullet effect to the whole clip caused the stuttering playback.  I chose to "Preview Render" the entire clip - it took about 45 seconds (for a 3 second clip, remember) and playback was now smooth.

So, I cannot conclusively say that a higher spec CPU will not help you but I think your "easiest" method of resolving your problem, albeit a time-consuming (though not a money-consuming) one, is to make considerable use of the Preview Rendering facility.

Thanks for the help. Magix said it could be cause im using a laptop and not a desktop

Could you guide me on how to use this "Preview Render" for the entire 3 Minute HD Video i have..I press ok and nothing happens?

heres what magix said

"The processor and the graphics card would be fine in a desktop computer. Since you are using a Laptop you will never get rid of those problems. The problem is that your laptop has a good NVIDIA Graphics Card but the computer itself only uses the oboard graphics card which is not nearly as good. Some game programs are able to pick up the graphics card but our program is not able to do so. If you have a desktop computer you could try installing it there and see if this works better for you."

emmrecs wrote on 6/20/2012, 3:47 AM

The Preview Render in VPX4 actually works very well and without a great deal of user "interference".

With your footage on the timeline do NOT make any selection of any part of it but simply choose Edit>Start preview rendering.  You will see a pop-up screen that says something to the effect "1 range has been selected..." and a red line will now be placed on the timeline above the entire length of footage.  Simply click "Yes" on that pop-up screen and VPX will carry out the rendering.

i tried that.. but thats like if im exporting the movie.. cause i had to wait 22 minutes after "Start Preview Rendering" on a 3 minute clip with that effect

Scenestealer wrote on 6/20/2012, 7:12 AM

For such a long clip, surely you best option would be to apply the effect and export the clip (using Cuda or Quicksync GPU rendering if available), then drag it back to the timeline.

Overclocking should not increase your CPU usage - I do not know what Magix are on about there!

Bit of a worry that they think that with MEP, an i7 cannot invoke the discreet graphics to accelerate the effect during preview on a laptop as opposed to desktop....??

Hmm don't see CUDA o Quicksync GPU Option..

So im guessing its treu what magic support said? That problem wont go away tll i get a desktop?

if so which deskptop do you recommend. so i can avoid this lagg issue when applying magic quick bullet effect on HD video

Scenestealer wrote on 6/20/2012, 7:20 PM

Hi

"Hmm don't see CUDA o Quicksync GPU Option.. "  This is only available when you are exporting to MPEG4 H264 (AVCHD) and is in the Advanced settings window of the MEP file export screen.

I am not sure you will see a great improvement with a desktop with Magic Bullet effects because even when it is using the GPU on my Core2 Quad desktop machine it only uses about 15-20% of the GPU and depending on the effect (say "Tilt & Shift"). If you go into "preferences" in the file menu at the top of the Magic Bullet window there is a choice to use GPU Open GL rendering or just CPU and in my case (with my Nvidia GTX460 card) selecting just CPU, the GPU usage with that effect applied, stays the same at 20%. Playback remains choppy either way.

So what I am suggesting is that even without the GPU rendering, on your incredibly high spec'd laptop, just using the CPU should give you a pretty reasonable chance of almost getting the smoothest playback you are likely to get. You may have to just "bite the bullet" (LOL) and render the effect first as suggested.

Is it only MB Looks that causes choppy playback with your machine using Full Res HD playback or do other effects / transitions cause stuttering? Are you seeing any GPU activty during periods of playback where effects like Magic Bullet have been applied - download a little free app from TechPowerUP called GPU-Z and you will see a realtime graph of GPU and graphics memory usage during timeline playback.

Cheers

Peter

Thanks peter. but  where are you seeing this "GPU Open GL rendering or CPU" option?

i went to Effects> Magic Bullet Quick Looks> Preferences.. but i dont see that option there

Its really only choppy with Magic Bullet Quick Looks effects. when using FULL RES HD

.

Also i tried that mpeg-4 option and it looks like it's not letting me select that option. Blocked. I took screenshots so you can see what i mean

Also here's screenshots and log of that app you told me to use when it starts skipping. shows 2 video cards

Hi

Thanks for the screenshots - very interesting.

The Magic Bullet preferences do not show any GPU support. On my machine there is a spin box above the first line in your screen for selecting Open CL or CPU. Therefore this plugin does not appear to support Cuda but as GPU-Z reports you have Open CL ticked with your Nvidia card so I do not know why it can not use this. Your GPU-Z screen shots and log confirm no activity with the 670M and only minimal activity with the intergrated GPU which could be just some decoding of the HD H264 video going on for playback, probably through the DX direct compute. No Open GL support tick on the iGPU either so I would say GPU processing of Magic Bullet is a big fat zip on your machine.

On my machine all the boxes are ticked at the bottom but as I mentioned in my previous post I am not sure what process is creating my GPU acceleration of MB. Do you see any significant GPU action if you apply a Prodad Vitascene filter to a clip? I see 50% or more GPU load with this.

As Magix support have stated, there appears to be a problem with their software "Picking up" the discreet graphics chip but if GPU-Z does not report Cuda Support then it makes me think that you should be looking for support from your Laptop supplier / manufacturer or Nvidia themselves to find out why Cuda is not supported, as it is in the spec. of the 670M Chip. There may be an updated driver available or coming (make sure you obtain one from the Laptop manufacturers site as they are often specific to mobile PC builds) and make sure all your Windows and PC drivers updates are current.

It must be very frustrating to have a cutting edge system with an important element unusable.

BTW if you untick "2 pass" in the MPEG-4 export window, can you select any of the hardware acceleration options as they are not available in 2 pass on my PC either?

Best

Thank for the information i attached screenshots so you can see how high CPU is. when i press play on the Preview box with the Magic Bullet effect on it.

Where do you see this "Prodad Vitascene filter"? im using Crime Scene Alternate Filter from "Magic Bullet Quick Looks"

2nd question: where do i see how much GPU action im using?

i also tried to untick 2 pass on Mpeg-4. and still doens't show those options

I updated the Nividia Driver..(beta) one... and i see now it shows CUDA checked on that app you gave me.. but it still doesn't give me those CUDA options on Magix softwae. neither on Bullet Quickbook options or mpeg-4

Did you get the driver from the Laptop manufacturer or from the Nvidia site? Have you spoken to the vendor of the PC about the issue?

Good that all the boxes at the bottom are now ticked but I am runing out of ideas about what else you can do.

I presume you have 3D hardware acceleration selected in the "Program Settings > Display options" of Magix ProX?

The high and rythmically changing CPU Usage in task manager looks unusual to me - MEP usually does not show much more than about 40 - 50% during preview and I don't think Pro X should be much different.

Prodad Vitascene is an effects program / plugin that is included with Magix MEP MX Premium and  maybe not with Pro X. It would be in the effects tab in the media pool under "Additional effects" if it is installed on your machine.

The GPU "action" - sorry for the slang.... is the GPU load graph and other increased readings in the sensors tab of GPU-Z.

Off the topic - how much of your 32GB of RAM do you see being used (in Task manager) on a large project? I am trying to assess how much might be optimum if I upgrade to i7 and win7 64.

1) I got the driver from Nvidia's website for latest driver... havem't spoken to MSI yet

2) 3d is standard option. i attached screenshot

3) Dont think Pro x has that Prodad effect.. I searched.. and dont hve Prodad Vitascene.

Must be Magic quick looks effect is too poweful for HD Video?. can you try that effect on HD vido and see what happens
1920 x 1080 is the resolution of my HD Video about 4 minutes long

i took screenshots of how much ram i use when its previewing the view

its always around 6 to 7 GB of ram

Hi

Thanks for the info on RAM usage but I take it that is with only one clip on the timeline. What happens if you have say 50 different clips on the timeline? More clips = more RAM usage and the more editing and effects you use = more RAM usage.

Are your clips 1920x1080  25 or 50 frames per second - interlaced or progressive? Are they AVCHD MPEG4 H264 or MPEG2 HD?

On my Q9650 Quadcore OC @ 3.4Ghz that effect on 1920x1080 50p MPEG4 H264 clips at full and half res is jerky and utilises about 50% CPU and 30% GPU. 1440x1080i MPEG2HDV + MBullet effect will playback smoothly at half res preview with about 40%CPU and 15% GPU usage

Actually reading your initial post again - you appear to be saying CPU usage goes to 100% after adding the effect even before you start playback! How long does it stay there if you do not start playback? It should drop back to virtually nothing after a few seconds if playback is not started - if not there is definitely something wrong with your machine or software installation.

Yup that was with only 1 clip. I just tried adding small clips of 50 seconds each. 25 of them on the timline. and ram is still the same.. dont see any change.. andi pressed play. same thing

Heres my HD Video info:

1920:1080  16:9 At 23.976,   4 minute .mov video  (MPEG-4) 2.26 GB
AVC (Main@L5.0)

No intelace processing

Import Module: MPEG Import Module

My High CPU:. when i load it on Video Pro X4. CPU power is only 2 percent. not high at all.

Only goes high. when i press play with the Magic effect..

When i press play without the effect. its only at 14 to 11 percent CPU Power (FULL HD Preview)

Now with tthe magic effect and not pressing play.. stays at 5 Percent CPU power)
