Help with "TV anti-cropping"

Novice-John31 wrote on 1/9/2018, 10:13 AM

Hi, I am trying to understand and use the "TV anti-cropping" tool in Photo Story deluxe 2017/8. It looks so easy, but after copying the clip to a pen drive and displaying the diagram on my TV screen, there appear to be two % age values at each corner and that does not account for the distance between the top of my TV screen and the top two corners of the diagram.

Also, when following the instructions given in the Context Help, I clicked on image optimization> TV picture> border cropping, but cannot find the "Full TV image" editor that the instructions direct me to.

I realize that I've missed a point or two, but, for the life of me, cannot find the missing points.

System :- AMD Athlon2 quad core, 16 GB RAM, ASUS HD6570 graphics card and OS. Windows 7 64 bit

I would greatly appreciate any help, even though it will expose me for the mutt that I am.

Happy new year to everyone,

John

Hi

The correct TV Cropping video for the TV to be tested should be used ie 4:3 or 16:9 (widescreen).

While playing the video on the TV screen note the % values, indicated in the image below, right where the top, left, right and bottom edge of the screen meets the edge of the image - see image below , this shows that the cropping is at 3%.

Once you have these values enter them in the relevant boxes shown below in the File, Settings, Slideshow Effects settings (M key) , TV Image size tab as shown below

Note:

  1. These values will apply only to the TV you have tested on. If the videos are to be played on other TV screens or devices, it is better to err on the side of caution and leave the settings at 10%.

  2. In practice there should be no essential action in the video at the extreme edges of the frame when recording, depending on your video camera it may not display 100% of what the camera sees on the screen or viewfinder.

  3. When adding titling, image objects etc in MEP they should not be outside the cropping frame which you can turn on in the Preview Monitor using the same dialog as where you enter the cropping values above.

Dear John,

Many thanks for your rapid reply.

I've played the video on my TV, but there is a black blank band above and below the parallelogram on my TV screen. The parallelogram fits exactly into the rectangle between the black bands at the top and bottom of the screen of my 5 year old Samsung full HD TV. By exactly I mean that the top LH and bottom RH corners are registering 0 %.

Also I have tried Ctrl+shf+ H, but it does not seem to work in Photo Story.

Do you think that I should let sleeping dogs lie and just start another post asking which digital format , 3 :2 , or 4:3, or 16:9 I should set in my camera and Photo Story, to best fit a normal HDTV?

Best wishes ,

John

Hi John

Apologies - the keyboard shortcut I gave you was for Movie Edit Pro (I am on holiday and do not have Photostory installed on my laptop.

. . . . there is a black blank band above and below the parallelogram on my TV screen

This would suggest either the TV is not in Full HD 16:9 mode, ie it is 4:3 aspect ratio and the video is beng letterboxed.

. . . . best fit a normal HDTV . . . .

16:9 is the standard HD TV aspect ratio unless manually set otherwise.

Hi John,

Please forget about my problem and just enjoy your holiday. You deserve it, with all the work you do.

I'll concentrate on cleaning up my garden for a couple of weeks or so. Your absence has made my wife a very happy woman!

Have a great holiday,

John

Dear John and Jeff,

To John ; Many thanks for your help. I shall go away and work hard on the problem and what I meant to say was, that as you were away on holiday, I would have to wait for my answer. This wait would force me to do some work in the garden, which would therefore make my wife a very happy woman.

To Jeff : In the immortal words of Dick Emery, "Oh, you are awful, but I like you".
