Help with filenames being generated with disallowed characters

John_Francis wrote on 6/15/2022, 12:41 PM

Hi:

I'm having a problem with Web Designer creating filenames using disallowed characters that cannot be uploaded to my website host provider. Specifically, Web Designer is generating filenames for various png graphic element files in a navigation bar on my webpages such as "96@2x.png", "101@2x.png". None of the files named using the "@" character can be uploaded to my website host provider since "@" is a disallowed character for filenames. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

@John_Francis

Hi

Who is your hosting provider?

Are you using Web Designer to upload the site or another FTP program?

In general the @ symbol in filenames for hosting on a web server is not a disallowed character.

Is the @ part of a 'disallowed character policy' of the hosting provider you are with?

My host provider is Lycos Tripod, and I have verified that, "@" is a disallowed character in filenames at this hosting provider. I've tried uploading these files 3 ways: via Filezilla, via Web Designer and directly through the user interface at Lycos Tripod and any file containing a "@" in the name will not upload. Do I need to find a new host provider?

@John_Francis

Hi

. . . . host provider is Lycos Tripod . . . .

This may be their 'sanitization policy' ie elimination of characters which, have specific function in the URL and possibly other 'control characters such as @ which is a reserved character in an email address, however not in a URL.

Options using Web Designer are limited -

  • Raise a support ticket with Magix to see if they have a solution eg is there a configuration file or hidden setting that can be changed - see this support article on how to navigate the support system.

  • Switch hosting provider.

    If you recently purchased Web Designer 19 then you have hosting at xara-online for one year (renewable) from data of purchase.

Okay, thank you for your assistance. I think the most expedient solution will be get a new hosting service.
