When selecting "export pdf", to where does the file get exported? I am trying to save the document I designed in a file suitable for emailing.

When you clicked Export to pdf a save dialog opened asking you where you want to save the PDF, if you just clicked Save, without specifying the location, then it is saved in the location that the dialog was using.
To find this click Export to PDF again and note the location is it going to save in - the location will be in this section of the dialog - in this example it is in the root of my W: drive.
