Edit/playback screen lags / freezes during playback

Bill-the-repair-guy wrote on 6/19/2024, 4:58 AM

As the title states i get a lot of the screen lagging and will freeze for a few seconds. If I move the timeline slider through the timeline of my video which is probably 4 of 5 tracks of GIFs and MP4's and an audio track Movie Studio 2023 will freeze and stay that way till i log out and back in again or restart. The rest of the computer works fine can open other apps , surf the net..etc. i have listed my computers specs.

was thinking it might be my page file so i made the page file automatic or windows managed, Movie studio is installed on a 2 tb SSD and i have 2 x 12 tb hard drives. my mainboard is an Asus B560 plus. The vid card is an Intel UHD Graphis 730 not sure about the onboard ram, probably 4-5 GB, when I create the movie to my hard drive looks and plays ok. was also using a second monitor for the playback/ edit. I changed it back to standard and opened up task manager on the second monitor. did not see any change when the screen lagged or movie studio froze. about 66% of ram is being utilized and a very small amount of the CPU

Hi

We need more information on your PC setup and the video formats you are working with - your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and, if one is installed, any 3rd party graphics card make/model in full.

Are the UHD 730 graphics drivers up to date - the current version for the UHD 730 is 31.0.101.5590 ?

. . . . onboard ram, probably 4-5 GB . . . .

If this is correct, then that is certainly one cause of the lagging/freezing. You need at least 8GB, preferably 16 GB

A screenshot of Movie Studio, Program settings, Device options tab would help.

What video format, codec and resolution are you importing - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to set up MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

What effects, if any, are you adding to the video clips?

As GID has commented in your other post, you need to sort out the project settings.

I believe some of the info you are requesting is in my attachments. what is the price range for 16gb video cards. are there certain brands i should stay away from. where are the log files located and can they be read / interpreted to anything meaningful?

where do i find "Movie Studio, Program settings, Device options tab "

 @Bill-the-repair-guy I think there is a misunderstanding,

You said 'onboard ram, probably 4-5 GB' - Your picture shows you have 64GB of RAM which is more than enough, when @johnebaker said 'You need at least 8GB, preferably 16 GB' this is what he was talking about.

Graphics cards have memory too but that is called VRAM, your pictures don't show anything about a graphics card, the Intel(R) UHD 730 graphics is your CPU integrated graphics. not a separate graphics card.

I bought an AMD RX580 based 16gb video card 😃

Gid wrote on 6/26/2024, 11:08 PM

@Bill-the-repair-guy Hi, you'll have to let us know how it goes, RX580 cards are 8GB so if you have a 16GB it must be a Chinese upgrade from what I have briefly read, this is one of those pages - https://www.tomshardware.com/news/5-year-old-radeon-rx-580-2048sp-gets-16gb-vram-upgrade,

Have you fixed the 1920x1080 2:1 in your project to 16:9 yet?
