DVD edit page very small text

sjmackinder wrote on 8/2/2022, 1:26 PM

I am editing a DVD and the page on which this is done has such tiny text and there is no obvious way to change this. Also is there a way to burn a DVD in 1080p instead of 1080i please?

I'm not sure what edit page you are referring to, sorry. Can you post a screenshot, please?

As for 1080p versus 1080i for a DVD; sorry (again) but not possible. The DVD Standard does not use anything like "High Definition"; by automatic and unchangeable default it is always Standard Definition, i.e., 720 x 576 in PAL land.

Hi Simon

Can you post a screenshot of the page you are editing so we can see what the issue is.

. . . . burn a DVD in 1080p instead of 1080i please . . . .

DVD is 480i maximum and the video must be interlaced to conform with the TV standards.

If you want 1080i /1080p then you need the Blu-Ray disc format and BD player, see this rather long topic where a similar question has been discussed in depth..

It is possible to burn Blu-Ray onto a standard DVD disc and play this in a BD player, not a DVD player, providing the total runtime is no more than 20 to 25 minutes.

This is not a bug - the central portion your are seeing is the menu button to play the DVD, the DVD menu has a white background.

Below is a quick demo of the editing points and how to change the menu template, use right click to access the component parts of the DVD menu, and double click a menu template to apply it.

The problem I am having is that the text in the side borders that you double click on to activate the central extended menu is so small that I am having to use a magnifying glass to read them. This looks like your screenshot but with the side bar menus in a text of around 2-3pts in size instead of 12-14pts

The screen resolution is setup so that the rest of VPX14 is perfect it is only when I access the burn DVD page that this becomes a problem and I can see no way of altering the settings to compensate. The central white pane dominates the screen and all the information inside this pane is fine in relation to text sizes etc. I cant find any corners to drag to reduce the central pane size to reduce its overall size to allow the side bars to be enlarged and the text accordingly

I have burnt 100s of DVDs in VPX7 and the burn DVD screen looks exactly the same as yours but the VPX14 screen gives huge priority to the central white pane and minimally small allocation to the side bars and menus thus renderding the side menus unreadabe without a magnifying glass

What is a standard laptop screen?

Those are all available as laptop screen sizes. I ask because my view has wider boarders than your view. My screen aspect ratio is 16:9

Your whole image is wider and not as tall as my own so I'm suspecting a different screen ratio or as John has suggested there has been an alteration from a standard view in Windows somewhere.

Ray.

@sjmackinder

The physical size of the menu text across the whole program is determined by your screen resolution. As an example on my system, this is what the text looks like with my Windows desktop resolution at 1920x1080 verses 2560x1440 (these shots of my MEP 2021):

You can see that the higher the desktop resolution, the smaller the physical text size. My guess is you have the UHD+ screen? Even with the 17 inch screen , that will result in quite small text. That looks like a beast of a machine, BTW!

On my system, the physical text size in the Disc Options section is basically the same as the text of the "File, Edit, Effects..." menus across the top of the Edit screen. Is yours similar?

As a test, close the project, go back onto your Windows desktop (Right click, Display Settings) and change the resolution to 1920x1080, then re-open your project and see if the text size of the DVD menus has increased.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

To set the edit screen so that all the various panels are not huge and unusable go to Window>Window arrangement>Standard. That menu item also allows you to create your own, personalised layout and save it.

For me, I very much prefer the Source and Program windows to be "the other way around", i.e. the Program screen in the middle. So I create that layout (by dragging the windows to where I want them to be) and then going to Window>Window arrangement>Save I can give it a name (I use the obvious "My Edit") and the screen always opens to this layout.

Thank you Jeff that all worked well. I guess if I want to use the full capability of the screen for other programs then I will have to go back to the screen resolution and change this up to full 3840x2400 as VPX cannot cope with this in the DVD edit window?

Bummer. There must be a reason for it though. As you mentioned above, make sure you're up to date on patches: Help>Update Online

Also make sure your laptop drivers are all up to date. I don't know whether the graphics card drivers (the RTX 3060) need to be updated separately.

The fact that VPX 7 is OK compared to VPX 14 (also considering your other issue) is not 100% valid because you are using VPX 14 on a different machine, if I read your Signature correctly.

Yes the other PC is running in 1920x1080 as this is its max resolution. I have recently updated the RTX3060 as advised on this forum. I have checked for updates and there are none available. Oh well maybe running in 1920x1080 will have to suffice, it might even improve the slight glitching that I was getting in winmedia player

Hi Simon

With the screen resolution set back to its default 3840x2400, start a new project, add one video clip to the timeline and then go to the DVD menu editing page - is the text 'normal' or still very small?
