Does Vegas 13 or 14 support reading Red Dragon R3D files natively?

I am very interested in Vegas. I have Sony licenses going back to version 8. I'd love to take advantage of the new software but, for my purposes, it must support 5K RED Dragon R3D files natively. It does not have to output 5K but I will need to be able to edit them natively. Does Vegas 13 support that? If not, will Vegas 14?

Hi John,

Thanks for the link. So it's 4096X4096. I don't know if this is the lateral thinking you're talking about but I could shoot at 4K. I saw another work around someplace while poking around about this. Here's the thing. I'm not putting out even 4K now or for a while but I do like shooting 5K. So can I open the 5K on 13? It looks like not. What about 14? Any plans for that?

Hi

AFAICS the only software that supports r3d files is Red's own video editting suite.

Hi

R3d are RAW files and Red have an application called Redcine-XPro that can process them to RGB and apply corrections and export / transcode them without losing the original RAW data. It does this by changing the data in the XML file (I think).

According to Red in the manual, there are quite a few of the Pro NLEs like Premiere CC, Final Cut, Edius, Davinci Resolve and Vegas that can handle R3d but with limitations and they have an SDK available for NLE manufacturers to create a plugin for Redcine-X Pro.

Scenestealer has landed on the exact point I was hoping to find out about: will Vegas continue to support the RED echo system, keeping up with those codecs. I'm not going above 5K for the forseeable future but they have new cameras (Raven, Scarelet-W) that will have a large user base. They have others like the 8K Helium, which land squarely in the top shelf studio cameras.

I know you can create proxies and use Vegas to edit those then export and EDL of one sort or another and conform in DaVinci Resolve, etc.

Will they support the codecs natively? I'm having doubts and so as much as I like Vegas, it may not be for me anymore.
