Hi oldhat. You upgraded to Win 7 perchance? It's up to you really whether you want to keep it or not, but at 17% you sure would win a lot of space. I found this useful in a Google search.

Many thanks - very helpful - yes, I'd upgraded from XP to Vista and had no idea that the old stuff had been retained.

Thanks for replies - yes, I've deleted the windows.old folder with no visible effect on my system, saving 17% of the space on my drive C. I also saved 3 GB by opting not to use the 'hibernate' feature in future, as I've not found it useful.
