One of my colleagues keeps asking me to disable resampling for our group project because it makes the footage look blurry, but I have no idea how to do it.
What is the workflow between the members of the group project, eg:
does each member have a specific task eg 1 creates the Intro, another the Outro, and others contribute segments to be incorporated into the final video
how are you transferring each members contribution to the others?
Does each member have the same set of media resources?
Google - In video editing software like Sony Vegas, "resampling" refers to the process of adjusting the frame rate of video clips to match the project's frame rate, which can sometimes lead to motion blur or stuttering.
Hi, I posted last night that I know VP has a resample option, so I searched but couldn't find 'resample' in the VPX instructions beyond the Timestretch mouse mode which I doubt the OP's colleagues are ref to. So I posted the quote above & was wondering if they were all using the same software or were they just using resample as a generic word. But it was early morning o'clock so I deleted it & went to bed.
I saw your post last night and was surprised to see it deleted this morning.
I personally think that depending on the replies we get from Johns' and my questions, that the desired requested result may not be possible and need a rethink.
I'm not a deep connoisseur, but when it comes to resampling as a synonym, I believe that natively (and not with reference to plugins) you may be wanting to improve intermediate images (I use this a lot). If this is in the clip property, or with the Speed effect.
Given what the others have said, my guess is that you all are filming with different frame rates, and probably some with variable frame rates. If you want no "resampling" in any video editing software, all of you have to film at the same frame rate, no variable frame rates, and use exactly the same frame rate in the program.
. . . . If you want no "resampling" in any video editing software, all of you have to film at the same frame rate, no variable frame rates, and use exactly the same frame rate in the program . . .
This is certainly a key factor, however I believe that is one part of a bigger issue, taking Rays question:-.
. . . . Is this project for some kind of media college course . . . .
Using this as one scenario of a group project, the 'management' depends on not only ensuring that the individuals members are working on with the same media formats frame rates etc, there are several other issues to be managed, eg versioning and the means of distribution of the component sections to other members of the group are 2 other potential issues.
Worst case scenario, is group members using a range of video editing software and distribution of video exports of each component section, all the re-encoding involve is going to drop the quality quickly.
Best case scenario would be a dedicated networked Media Server, accessed by all the members of the group, which handles all the media resources and manages the file sharing/locking issues.
My project partner is a lead 2-D animator, and I'm the guy compiling everyone's animations together. He keeps telling me that the footage is blurry and it shouldn't be, and to "disable resampling."
@Joshua-Burner Hi, you've partially answered one question & that is you're partner most likely uses different software, & the request from them implies they don't know that your software - VPX doesn't have a "disable resampling" option. You need to confer with them of what options in VPX you do have & how they'd like you to change them.
--------------------------
PS. I get the feeling your partner is presuming you have that option,
I Googled 'does DaVinci resolve has disable resampling' -
Yes, DaVinci Resolve allows you to disable resampling,
So I Googled - 'do most video editors have disable resampling' -
Yes, most professional video editors, particularly those used for more advanced editing, offer the ability to disable resampling (or "force resampling"), allowing users to control how frame rates are handled during editing and rendering
We need more answers to be able to help, preferably to the already posed questions as the term 'blurry' and 'resampling' could mean many things.
Motion blur.
Blur or softening caused by resolution changes.
Blur caused by using clips of mixed frame rates.
Blur caused by additional compression on the exported re-render that tends to happen when not using an intra codec.
Blur caused by interpolation of frames.
Blur caused by how files were transferred from one person to another if via a cloud service.
Any mixture of the above.
At the start of any corroborative project there should have been a set of technical specs laid down for everyone to adhere to. All files should be able to be accessed via a common file server by all participants with clearance or if not all files accessible, at least able to upload any files for someone else to use without fear of them being re-compressed or re-encoded.
Ideally everyone should be using the same software or at least able to open another's project file type along with the projects' relevant file types. It can be done without that compatibility but it becomes a bit harder.
In those case scenarios disabling resampling would cause each video clip to play at it's recorded frame rate in comparison to the projects set frame rate. Meaning a project set to say 25 frames per second if the main action was shot at 25fps, would allow a video clip recorded at 60 frames per second to play at 25 fps, effectively producing a slow motion effect without the need to use a re-speeder to match the fps of the project.
If my understanding is correct I would think that would cause more problems than it would solve and need the added use of interpolation to correct some of the inevitable jaggedness that would produce due to the larger gap of time created between each frame exposure.
....okay. I'm so very sorry for wasting y'all's time. Apparently I was given early low quality footage to work with and it was a case of disorganization. Sorry.
@CubeAce Hi, yep, I sort of understand it, I think, but not to have a full discussion about it & a big part of the reason I'm interested in this topic/post.
These are VP's Project properties options , Disable resample is set at default & because my knowledge is limited I rarely touch this. I do occasionally play with it, I have read multiple docs on it & I do know that the other two options, Frame Blend & Optical Flow can create unwanted blurring because it attempts to blend the frames together rather than stepping from one to the other.
VP's instructions which I've also read a few times but like I say I don't touch this option & leave it at Disabled.
Analyzes the existing frames before and after the new one and blends them to create new frames as needed
@Joshua-Burner No problem, hope you work it out, I'm sure if you do have further info you're more than welcome to post or ask on here. It'd be nice to know what your resolve will be.
VPX does have an Interpolation option on the objects properties, I knew about this option but I was looking for Resample or a similar option at the project level but couldn't find anything, & as no-one has mentioned one I guess there's isn't one, no idea if this has anything to do with your problem.
