difficulty importing video

I have a Panasonic camcorder and am trying to get my video on the Movie Edit Pro 14. When I try to record from the camcorder Magix says there is no camcorder plugged in. I've also tried putting in the disc but for some reason only the first few seconds upload to the program. HELP!

Are you using a firewire cable to connect your camcorder to your PC? The only way to dump a movie directly from camera to PC is via a firewire connection. USB will not work for that.

In addition to what Tim said, I would even ask the question whether this is a tape-based miniDV (or HDV) camera in the first place. If it's not tape-based, the capture option doesn't apply at all. You'd just file-import the material from the cameras storage, whatever that may be (internal hard drive, DVD, memory card). I mention this, because it seems to be one of the most common questions/misconceptions here.
