Crashes or won't run

Adam-Taylor wrote on 3/6/2022, 7:46 PM

I installed on Win 11 box with all updates. Ran good on initial install, then crashed with VC errors, now I get no errors and app won't run. I've had this problem in the past with Win 8 and I'm disappointed it still occurs. I've reinstalled app, updated visual c, still no love. It works on fresh build, but somewhere along the line (I use my PC for other stuff like gaming, office, & work stuff) it stops working, then I have to reimage a PC and install from scratch for my projects. Sad.

@Adam-Taylor

Exactly which version of PS do you have? The latest is 21.0.2.115 which is certified to run under Win 11. I doubt very much that any earlier version is similarly certified.

If you do have that latest version I think you need to create a Support Ticket. Start here and always choose the option (on each page, if necessary) to Ask Support.

Can you also post a screenshot of the actual error message you see? That might give us, fellow-users, some kind of clue as to what the problem might be.

I downloaded the latest download, but it only shows as 21.0.1.74. I can't even get it to start to update it. When I run it, the cursor spins for a second, then nothing. Event viewer shows nothing in the app log, and the following in the system log:

Event ID 10016

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54}
 and APPID

 to the user Adam-PC\artin SID (S-1-5-21-3826770442-3462912896-1482281233-1001) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I tried doing a uninstall/reboot/deleting any directories left behind. It's weird because it worked when I first purchased it two days ago. I updated it and started a project. I'm running an sfc /scannow to be sure nothing got messed up. If that doesn't help, I'll open a support ticket.

Hi

Re-installing achieves very little if you do not clean up the files/folders and registry entries left behind by the un-installer as it knows nothing about them, they are created on first run.

It is recommended to use Revo free uninstaller to remove the program and scan for, and remove, left over files and registry entries.

From the event log the entries suggest that the account you are using does not have sufficient permissions to enable the program to run correctly

If your log on account is a local account then the 'administrator' privileges are some what restricted.

Try running the program as Administrator - right click the program shortcut and select Run as administrator to see if this works.

If you logon is a Microsoft Account then check that OneDrive is not being used as the default location for your documents etc. For video editing any files you use and the program creates must be on the local drive, not up in the 'cloud'.

OK. I did open a support ticket, but I think I may have resolved the issue in the meantime. Here are the details in case others are experiencing similar issues.

Fix was to do a system restore to several days before I installed a filename randomizer that seemingly jacked things up. Incidentally, I do use OneDrive backup which backs up my documents directory in case of ransomware attack so that is likely the cause of error in event log.

All is working fine now. I was able to update app, compile a slideshow and encode it to mp4 file fine.

As a final note, I'll mention that one of the feature I can't find or is missing from PS is picture randomization. If I sort by size, date, dimensions, etc, inevitably. pictures would end up grouped together non-randomly. In years past I've used a file renamer tool that jacked things up this year. I ended up finding a powershell command that did the job safely for me and is easy to run for anyone.

Just start Powershell from the Windows 10/11 start menu (I ran as admin), the load this command with the corresponding path to picture files.

Powershell command removed by Moderator - is unsafe in use.

Thanks for the replies earlier that helped me resolve my issue. Hopefully, this helps others.

Hi Adam

I use Advanced Renamer and Bulk Rename for changing file names, neither of them causes issues with PS.

The PowerShell command has been removed from your post - for users who do not know Powershell it is unsafe to use. There are no checks for duplicate numbers, prevention of running on system folders, or confirmations of actions such as the folder selected being correct etc

I also use Powershell scripts to create time based 'Edit Decision Lists' for getting the source video and images stored in different folders/subfolders into the correct chronological order where required for projects.
