cleaning audio

I have taken an old VHS tape recording and copied it to a DVD, then moved it to my computer.  When I play in on my computer there is a low level noise that you hear all the time.  Something like the hum from an old cheap power supply.  This noise is on the original VHS tape also, so it was not something which appeared during the copying process.

How or what software tool can I used to remove this noise from the video which is on the computer and, hopefully hear the voices without this noise?

Hi,

Do you use one of the Magix video products? There is an audio cleaning function built into that software. Right-click on the audio track in timeline view and you should be able to access it. The DoNoiser is probably the tool to use here. You might want to experiment with that a little. It's not the most comfortable feature to use, but it does offer the possibility to pick up a noise sample (which you should extract from a position where only the noise can be heard) and "substract" that from the entire recording.
