Cant use MP4 files on timeline

Crunch_Moment wrote on 12/23/2023, 3:09 AM

So Ive been tryin for an hour to troubleshoot and try to fix this on my own but this is just being more of a hassle then it worth; but my issue lies as i said in the subject above but when I drag and file that is MP4, MOV, MKV nothing works. all i get is pop ups like this after dragging it onto my timeline. all i get is this popup when i press activate online i get this popup.thats it i dont get an activate code screen or a redirect to activate i just get the pop up window and nothing happenes but afterwards i also get another popup but im pretty sure its because the encoder isnt downloading like it should. so this is essentially my problem, i cant download the encoder cause the link is broken and wont redirect me to the right place, so if you have any ideas on how to fix this would be great. ill put my specs and other additional screenshots to help diagnose the issue better. all my settings as well have been added to help figure this out as easy and fast as possible; I appreciate any help thanks.

i have the standard $60 movie studio 2024 version

im also using windows 10 pro

PC Specs:

Ryzen 5 5600x

32 gb ram 3200 mghz

rtx 3080 10 gb

@Crunch_Moment

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

The basic version of Magix Movie Studio, as I understand it, does not include a number of codecs needed to import a variety of video files, as you have found. In addition, mp4 is a "container" format, whose files may actually include a range of codecs, each with their own requirements!

However, the problem of the codec not downloading and installing (as it should, automatically, I don't think you should need to purchase it) suggests, I think, that either the Magix Server is down (in which case the only solution is to "keep trying", sorry) or your firewall/antivirus is blocking the connection (in which case, try temporarily turning it/them off and trying the activation again).

As to the other formats you mention, in particular .MOV. This does require that QuickTime, or one of its alternatives, be installed on your computer. This is done by you downloading and installing QT, it is not an automatic process (unlike what should happen with the standard MPEG-4 codec).

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As the issue occurs when adding video to the timeline what video format, codec and resolution are you using - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Note:

  1. MP4, MOV and MKV are container file formats not video formats, the video and audio can be encoded in a variety of formats, and combinations, inside the container file.

  2. I would suggest you put your computer specs in your profile Signature, for future reference - is saves having to ask again in the future.

@Crunch_Moment

I agree with the assessments of @emmrecs and @johnebaker

I notice in your video that all the videos seem to be from captured game play.

Depending on the screen capture device there may be bits within the wrapper that MMS will not cope with such as multiple sound tracks (I noticed you have had to increase the buffer size in your audio settings).

So variations that could throw up those warnings could be that the files most probably have wildly varying frame rates and are variable frame rate files rather than constant frame rate files.

The files may have multiple stereo sound tracks at odd sample rates.

You could try recording with a different screen recorder or try to set up the recorder to only use one sound track but ideally the files should also be a constant frame rate. Personally I would use OBS Studio and use the NVENC encoder and ensure you are capturing a single stereo sound track preferably at 48kHz and a constant frame rate. If you need to capture separate sound tracks that becomes a bit more tricky in MMS and a lot easier to do in Video Pro X as that is considered a more advanced editing need.

But for now do as the others have asked and get the data from the files using MediaInfo.

Ray.

okay so i disabled my firewall for everything and even disabled my antivirus at the same time and still just get this popup.nothing makes the popup start or work; I also never even got a code to begin with so am i just screwed with never getting this fixed; nothing ive done works and its very fustrating especially when i pay for a producet that doesnt use the most common video format.

is there anyway to manual download the codecs needed cause the automatic download just doesnt function or am i just gonna have to email the company about a fix or just get a refund cause i would like to use this program but it clearly isnt functioning correctly.

let me know if you need additional info I just want this to work.

Gents, surely the issue is not the types of file but the broken MPEG 4 import activation?

I'd bet that all those files are AVC and ordinarily readable by Magix, so the holdup is the activation.

@Crunch_Moment

Try a program reset: File>Settings>Reset Program settings to Default, then do a full computer restart and try again.

is there anyway to manual download the codecs needed cause the automatic download just doesnt function or am i just gonna have to email the company about a fix

Some codecs be installed separately but not the AVC/H264 codec as far as I am aware.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

I think the suggestion to start identifying this problem was a reasonable suggestion. Whichever way one comes at these problems, eventually leads to some sort of result so to my mind it doesn't matter which direction you come at it first. It is game play screen recorded video and in the past we have seen that throw up various problems although that particular warning message I have not seen on the forums before nor can I find a reference to it in the site's Support section.

@Crunch_Moment

Hi.

It is a screen recording and almost identical to the ones I produce myself using OBS. I can not find a problem with that file. Yes there are some slight differences in the bit rates but nothing that should cause that problem.

I did in 2020 post I had a problem with MP4 files not being playable after a windows update that I could not cure from within MEP (MMS). Eventually I downloaded the MP4 wrapper from the K Lite codec pack and it is still on my system and have not had any problems since.

While I am not advocating this action as a solution (I know a lot of people here think it creates more problems than it solves) it worked for me and the pack or the parts of it that are installed can be removed if it doesn't work.

It's unlikely that Magix are going to reply to a ticket any time soon during the holiday period so may be worth a try.

Ray.

[Edit] Scrub my suggestion. I have read through the K Lite site and the codecs will not solve this issue.

Perhaps this time around a complete uninstall of the program is called for.

If the last popup warning is saying the activation code is incorrect and that download should be automatic, is it possible the download of the program itself didn't download correctly? What if the program was de-registered in the user account and then uninstalled completely and then re-downloaded and activated?

I have not seen this happen before.

okay so idk I tried deactivating and reinstalling movie studio nothing worked still the same problem I think it something on my pc thats making the pop up not function correctly cause i had my friend download everything on his pc and his activate link worked he was able to drag and drop the videos normally; I even tried on my laptop and it worked perfectly fine so idk how but something on my main pc is conflicting with the popup; im thinking maybe it has something to do with my firewall or antivirus stuff but i tried pretty much everything at this point other then me like fresh wiping my pc to see if that works but i dont feel like doing that.

Hi Al

. . . . surely the issue is not the types of file but the broken MPEG 4 import activation . . . .

I would normally agree with this as the h.264/AVC codec is usually activated automatically on install.

@Crunch_Moment

The only scenario I can think of that would give the messages being seen is the program is either, still in Trial mode, or the Extra Content has not been installed.

Assuming MMS 2024 has been fully activated with a P3- serial number, does the Extra Content installer, see under Help, Install extra content, look like this?
