Cannot import mpg files into Pro15+

I recently recorded in Pro 15 from an HD cam to mpg HDV2 format. The mpg files plays OK in Windows Media Manager but Movie Edit Pro 15 cannot import the file, or any other mpg file for that matter. It gives the error message that the file cannot be read. There is no codec activation otpion under the Help menu. What can I do to get Pro15 to recognize mpg files?
