cannot copy video effects

Greg123 wrote on 2/21/2024, 2:25 PM

for Movie Studio 2022 Suite,

What a annoying thing - when I cut a long clip and apply video effects ( Brightness, gamma...) on one part, even when I apply the same effects, the same values on the other part , the two parts don't look the same - one is little brighter, sharper than the other. I even tried to: copy video effects from one part and paste them on the other part ( both cut from one long clip) and still visual effects are NOT the same. I remember in Studio 2016 I didn't have that problems....

Any idea how to fix it?

thank you !

Hi Greg.

I have deliberately not replied to this one before today to see if anyone else was willing to step in first and try with an explanation.

I would be surprised if applying the same processing to the end of a long video clip would give you the same results as at the beginning because the recorded values of the frames change along with the the focal length and light conditions as they vary from beginning to end. Your video is no more than a series of individual images, each one being looked at in real time by the cameras processor, evaluated as to what settings need to changed to keep the image in focus, sharpness, and have the correct exposure, colour temperature etc and then those changes are baked into ever single frame. The net result will be that the images change settings over the time the video is running. You wouldn't notice it while playing the whole clip as the changes would be gradual over time.

To test this try exporting a frame from where you would make your first cut as a jpg and then one from where you would join it to. Then place the two jpegs on the timeline next to each other and butt join them together. Then scroll between the join back and forth using the scroll wheel and you should notice a variation.

Using the contrast and colour controls on one video clip and then applying it to the next clip will only give a relative change by the same percentages of the effects used in the first clip and the variation in looks between the two images will remain.

You may have more success using the 'Shot Match' tool which was designed with this type of use in mind. (See item 7 page 102 of the pdf manual) and the instructions on how to use it.

If that doesn't work.

The only other alternatives I can think of is try to do the necessary adjustments by eye or use a cross-fade type that distracts the viewer from the differences such as fading to black and back. You will probably still notice the difference but to anyone else not knowing there is a difference will probably view it without noticing.

Ray.

Greg, if you're concerned that the same value of the effect is not being pasted, check it on the new clip. Click on the new clip, click on the Effects tab, double-click on the effect in the Effects area (highlighted blue box for colour correction in this example). That will open the effect and you will see the value eg Brightness/Contrast Gamma set to -59.

This is Movie Studio 2024 but I doubt that 2022 is different.

If the numbers for the particular effect are the same (and they will be if you copied and pasted them correctly), then the only explanation is as Ray has said: that portion of the clip is different and so the effect values won't have the same effect (pardon the pun).

You can also untick each effect to see the difference between it being applied and not.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thank you Ray, thank you AAProds for your answers.☺️

First - I am not new to Magix , my first being MEP 2010.And for the first time I had that issue in MEP2022. This is not about comparing first part of the clip with the last part. ( I mostly edit my drone footage in 4k30, where maximum clip is 3.5GB -5 min20sec) Even when I cut that long clip and apply the same video effects to both parts I notice the difference in the place of cut ! Yes, I am using cross-fade transition to mask it. But I found another way - first I apply video effects to the whole 5 minut clip and then cut it, or- say - when I have 5 clips from the same location, I render - mix it - first, then start a new project and import that freshly mixed clip ( say 30 minut) as a one piece easy to apply all my video effects.

And as I said - this issue is new for me since my previous versions of MEP were OK.

Speaking of video effects - I also found in MEP2022 that picture animations are very primitive.😒 In MEP2016 I had the options to customize those animations - e.g. set speed and length of every aspect of "movement". In MEP 2022 all options are preset without any possibility of adjustment.

Conclusion - MEP 2022 is a cheaper, compromised version of all previous versions....😠😲

@Greg123

Hi,

To repeat what you said, you are applying effects to a video clip, placing a cut and the frame at the left of the cut looks different from the frame at the right, correct?

Could you please give us screen shots, including details of which effects and the values of the parameters that you have applied?

I don't have MEP2022, only MMS2023 and 2024. In 2023, I tried only two effects - HDR Gama = 30 and Color Temperature = 18. I don't see any difference on either side of the cut.

But I found another way - first I apply video effects to the whole 5 minut clip and then cut it, or- say - when I have 5 clips from the same location, I render - mix it - first, then start a new project and import that freshly mixed clip ( say 30 minut) as a one piece easy to apply all my video effects.

Here is an alternative to exporting then starting a new project - use Mixdown for video+audio, Shift+M. First, set a range over what you want, mute any tracks that have objects within the range if you don't want them in the mixdown, then do the mixdown, Shift+M which opens the export screen. Check the box for Export Range Only. By default, this will export to mxv and replace your material with the mixed down mxv, usually on a lower track. Move it to track 1, and you're good to go. Undo will get you back to where you were. You should have noted where the mxv file went, you can import it and do what you want.

Another point, why would you start a new project and not just open another Movie in the same project? That way you have access to all of your material from the first Movie.

Speaking of video effects - I also found in MEP2022 that picture animations are very primitive.

Do you mean the "Attach to picture position in the video..." feature, that is, automated motion tracking?

If so, then it was problematic in MEP2022 because Magix changed the Size/Position tools to Size/Position/Rotation and a lot of other things, like the motion tracking, got messed up. The SPR tools were updated in 2023/2024, but automatic motion tracking was and still is a problem - there is no access to the keyframes of the movement of the overlay. That said, it seems that just moving the object under SPR makes adjustments even though no keyframes are shown. Strange.

In any event, SPR in 2022 is a problem and you would be much better off with 2024.

Hi

. . . . MEP 2010 . . .

I presume you mean MEP MX.

. . . . drone footage in 4k30 . . . .

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

In the Video section of the anlysis, if you see this line

Framerate mode: Variable

This may be the cause of the issue, many video editors including MMS do not handle VFR video well, try converting to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) using a converter such as Handbrake or Avidemux.

If the video clip is constant frame rate, can you share one of the video clips if there are no privacy issues with it, that exhibits the issue for us to test.

Use Google Drive, One Drive or a file sharing site such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

Ensure that the file sharing is set to 'Anyone who has the link'.

Hi,

First - I have Movie Studio 2022 Suite,

By Picture Animation I meant Movement Templates applying to still pictures. In MEP2016 I could customize almost all parameters making still pictures "alive". In MS2022Suite out of 15(?) options I can customize only 2.

Another point, why would you start a new project and not just open another Movie in the same project? That way you have access to all of your material from the first Movie

When I render 5 clips into one big clip I don't lose anything, but now I have one clip easy to apply video effects, cut and move left whole clip...without analyzing anything...😊

thank you for your answers

Hi

Going back to the original problem . . . . the two parts don't look the same - one is little brighter,. . . .

. . . . .without analyzing anything . . . .

The MediaInfo analysis, of one of the clips, is to determine if the issue you are having with copy and pasting effects is being caused by the format of the video clips being imported into the project.

. . . . Movement Templates applying to still pictures , . . . I could customize almost all parameters, making still pictures "alive". . . .

I assume you are referring to templates such as the Move Linear which only have one set of key frames visible at the start of the object - this is an old 'bug' which has been in all versions going back at least as far as MEP 2015.

See the video below for the fix, I am using MMS 2023

. . . . out of 15(?) options . . .

You should have a lot more options - in the case of my 2023 version, I have 54 movement templates, have you installed all the Extra Content ? See under Help, Install extra content

Hi John.

It could be the title templates that could have parameters changed with the Magix 3D program that is still active in Video Pro X.

As for some animations / images going missing, some of them were probably the ones that were quite low resolution like the animated balloon ones I remember being mentioned a long time ago and before my time here.

To my mind there have been a lot of changes over the last decade to video in general other than those in video editors, including higher bit rates of video files, better compression, leading to more data being captured in camera and then the changes to processing power of the computers and operating systems and the way the codecs are handled by the graphic processors and System X itself to make valid comparisons of video editing programs over that time period. The idea of 'Shot match' and it's explanation of use in the pdf manual shows Magix are aware of such problems regarding the use of more traditional methods of matching footage from the same video.

Hi Ray

You are looking at the Title templates, I initially thought this as well until I read the description again, and @Greg123 confirmed in his last post, refers to the View/Animation, Movement effects.

From my testing, and I tested more than 50% of the 56 templates as many are just duplicates eg have left/right movement versions. I think so long as the Combine effects curve with object length is deselected, all are editable.

MEP 2015 has, not including the Rest option, 59 templates, MMS 2024 56 templates Movement effects template, we have lost 3 over this time span.
