Can't get it to work on 2 different laptops

Charles-Kelly wrote on 3/27/2024, 12:25 PM

Just purchased the new version from Magix. Installed OK. On my ASUS nothing shows up in the video import drop-down selector panel (see attached) so no video appears. On my Microsoft Surface Pro the video selector shows the options and I can select the correct video but can get no sound no matter what I change. Both systems Widdoes 10. The windows settings is showing that the microphone is being accessed by the Video saver. I have tried deleting and reinstalling on both machines also installing with the antivirus switched off but no change on either machine. Where am I going wrong?

Hi

. . . . windows settings is showing that the microphone . . . .

In Windows Settings, Privacy, there are 2 settings - Camera and Microphone options, ensure the Allow desktop app to access your camera / microphone is turned on in both

Note: these setting are lower down the page, scroll down the page to see them.

. . . . I have tried deleting and reinstalling on both machines . . . .

This is the option of last resort, doing so can make the issues worse without proper clean-up after uninstalling.

Thanks, John. I now have the video coming through on my ASUS but still no sound on either machine. I have set the audio set to Advanced and the drop down shows:

Digital Audio Interface (USB Digital Audio)
Digital Audio (WDM)
Realtek HD Audio Mic input (WDM)
Realtek HD Audio Stereo input (WDM)
Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio)

Nothing works on any option except the bottom one where the levels start to go green but a strange acoustic feedback starts.

Interestingly Video Saver does show up under settings/privacy as an app that is allowed access and that it has been accessed just now. Any other thoughts?

Hi

. . . . Nothing works on any option except the bottom one where the levels start to go green but a strange acoustic feedback starts. . . . .

That is probably due to feedback from the laptop speakers to the microphone.

From the list you have posted, the device should be one of the Digital audio options. I cannot narrow down which option, as my capture device is a different model/make from the one you have.

Do you have an external USB audio device/speakers connected to the laptop/Surface?

With the USB capture device plugged in, do you see it as a recording device in the Windows Sound settings dialog shown below?

If not, right click on the blank area and set the options shown below to see if the device appears.

If the device appears and is 'disabled' enable it.

Also check that the volume meters on the right in the above images move when playing the tape/camera.

Looks like I have the same settings as you suggest although yours says "Aux" and displays phono plugs.- on mine I have "Digital Audio interface". and right-clicking all the options are selected. Looking at the Advanced tab for the interface shows the only option as greyed out. Perhaps that is why in the top screen grab it suggests that the bit rate is set to 0. Don't know how to change it. Any ideas?

Hi Charles.

In the advanced tab of the recoding page you had open there, change the sample rate to 48kHz and 24 bit. That would still result in sound reproduction better than most people's hearing and the program would cope with it better. Most Video editing applications would not be that happy with a 96000hz sampling frequency. The top message from the recording application has just looked at your settings and copied them rather than picked a useful one. 96000Hz at 32 bit needs a lot of processing in real time. If you think the quality of sound from a pre recorded CD is good enough then 44.1kHz at 16 bit should suffice. The quality of the sound produced is in the accuracy of the DAC and not the sample rate it is decoded from.

In your image the device shows up as being mono - do you have a USB microphone/audio device connected to the computer?

Check in Device Manager, Computer, Sound, video and game controllers to see if the capture device is available - mine is as shown in the image below, yours should have a different name.

If you are not sure which one it is, post a screen shot of this section.

Hi.

I should have said I don't have your program but went through the normal process of resetting the audio for video editing in general. So I looked through your request paying a bit more attention to the images and your description.

One thing struck me. The use of (WDM) "Windows Driver Management" at the end of each of the possible selections. I had never seen that option come up before for screen or general capture settings so I checked in Movie Edit Pro 2022 at the screen and capture settings available and sure enough it was there.

But selecting that driver gave me the same result you are having. IE, no result and a warning.

Sure enough, no audio could be captured or heard, so I assume the input must be via Direct Sound as in Direct X.

That works.

So it seems to me that you need to find the settings that allows the normal drivers to be used which on most systems the default would be from using the Direct X application which is a layer on top of the Microsoft Windows Device Manager which normally lies hidden at the back of the operating system with no visible controls and should have been downloaded with the Windows 10 operating system.

I have never had the experience of setting up a Surface Pro so have no idea of what is available to it but these are my working settings for recording screen captures which would be similar for video capture from an analogue device.

Ray.

Hi John.

Correct, I have nothing plugged into the line inputs but I was selecting the stereo mix to do a screen recording and I had the web browser playing a video for it to pick sound up from for both tests. I do not get any feedback using stereo mix. Check the Windows Volume Mixer to ensure you do not have additional inputs running such as the mic input I also do not use or have the RealTec Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer Enabled. I will try to find something to play audio into the line inputs and try again.

Rae, I have checked as you suggested but the only device that seems to be available is the Digital Audio Interface and there are no options on offer under the Advance tab on this and the entry is greyed out. Should the Video Saver have installed anything else?

CubeAce wrote on 3/30/2024, 7:30 PM

@Charles-Kelly

Hi Charles.

Unlike some of the others I have never used the video transfer ability of my software and only used it for screen recording but assuming it is saying your device is connected and ready for use as shown by the green tick, is the Stereo Mix not available in the corresponding drop down menu for the audio source?

It's a 'what your pc hears is what you record' sort of input so should pick up what the dongle is producing.

One way of checking the dongle is actually delivering audio is to open the Windows Volume Mixer and seeing if an audio level is present. It should show any currently application playing audio.

If you are not sure you have an application other than Video saver to check the device is producing audio that can be captured, Microsoft's Voice recorder can be used to check.

The app says to connect it to the mic input but it can be changed to use the Stereo Mix option in Windows as the default audio input setting which is what I have done here if needed.

I honestly don't know if any of this will help you or not but it would be a part of my own fault finding routine for something like this occurring.

Changing the input device to Stereo mix does not stop any of my video editors or music DAWs from functioning or recording as normal and is my normal default setting unless I actually need to use a microphone then of course that settings needs changing back to use a microphone.

[Edit]

Thinking further about that. Maybe that is why @johnebaker was getting feedback trying to use my settings while I didn't.

Ray.

Hi Charles

Going off on another tack if @CubeAce suggestion to try the capture device with Windows Voice recorder does not work.

Are you recording from:

A VHS recorder using the Scart plug and cables that came with the software, connecting to the USB device through the S-Video black input socket or the Composite yellow input, audio in either case being connected to the red/white inputs.

A video camera using the supplied composite video/audio cable of either of these types:-

In the case of the second image, there is also a version which does not have the black S-Video plug.

Charles, try connecting your VCR to your TV to confirm it is actually outputting audio. If it has the feature (possibly on the remote) try changing audio tracks from Hifi to Norm.

Also, try another tape.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
