Can resolution be improved on this short nighttime video?

lauriemessage wrote on 8/24/2022, 4:13 PM

We have Video Pro X 14 and Neat Video on a Windows 10 PC and are trying to improve the resolution on a very short clip shot by a security cam at night. We would like to identify an animal that appears briefly, but the resolution is too low. The original video clip is 4 seconds and is a .3gpp file. Video Pro X 14 didn't recognize the file type. We were able to convert the first second of it to mp4 which loads into Video Pro X. Can someone try to improve the resolution on either of the files (.3app or mp4) for us and if so, shall I upload it here or send some other way? The one-second clip is sufficient to identify the animal.

Hi.

If you want people to try to improve the image or identify the animal for you then upload the files to google drive where what quality there is won't be degraded further when downloaded. Then post a link back here.

I am sure there are those here that would relish the challenge.

Ray.

I would think both Laurie as one or two here are very handy at converting files and not losing quality in the conversion but others may just want to try the converted file.

It may be a few hours though before some members try as it's bedtime in my time zone.

Then again someone may be able to do it before I get back 😃

I imagine if someone is able to convert one of the files enough to recognize the type of animal that they will post a link here where I can go to download it, but if I'm wrong, let me know.

Hi.

Do you have McCaws in your part of the world because that movement to me looks very bird like but depending on the size of that fence that thing is huge.

I agree with Gid. You are not going to get much additional resolution out of that file. The pixel blocks are too large and the file only looks 8 bit at best. (Wow, it's 13 bits!)

From what I see. The head extends first and then the body follows. Like it is using a beak to hold onto the fence.(or possibly that is a branch?) The tail section seems to have a hing point rather than being flexible.

Hi

The video resolution is too small toe improve the definition.

Looking at the video clip on repeat, this is an animal not a bird, the body size, pointed head, tail movement and the mode of leaping would suggest this is a squirrel that is present in your locality.

Laurie, how high is that gate/fence? Pretty big squirrel, John! Looks more like a biggish cat, they way it springs off the ground. Small mountain lion/cougar?

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Gid, Thanks very much for your help and comments! That little black square sure puts things in perspective, lol, and now we don't feel so bad about not getting a good result with Neat Video; it always indicated that there wasn't enough there for it to get a result, but we aren't very experienced in using it.

That vid was taken in Colorado, south of Denver, near a large reservoir and open space.

I have two nighttime videos taken near Yosemite (California) that might be able to be improved. It's of a few cats (probably lynx/bobcats) and movement of something on a hillside in the background. I also have a video of a bear that passes through to raid the bins on rubbish collection day; would be nice to get a sharper vid of that too. Should I start a new thread for these or post a link to them here?

lauriemessage wrote on 8/25/2022, 9:47 AM

Looks like I separated Gid's quote from my reply so for now am replying to 3 others here, without quotes. Thank you all very much for your comments and info! Much appreciated.

I need to learn how to include a quote in a reply -- perhaps click "Comment" then select "Block Quote" to insert a quote, then type the message below the quote?

Ray: There are no McCaws in the area unless a pet McCaw escaped. It's in Aurora, Colorado, near Denver. Thanks for your input.

John: It does resemble a squirrel, but it would be a huge one. We suspect it may be a weasel, mink or raccoon. It's a bit thin for a raccoon. Had we been able to sharpen the video enough to see the markings on the fur, that would have helped.

AA: From memory, the fence is around 4-5 feet high. A cougar might be another possibility, although the tail in the video looks too bushy/furry for a cougar.

Again, thanks for your help and comments 🙂

Hi Laurie.

To block quote first copy and paste the quote you want into your reply and then with the text highlighted click on the icon you will see above with the quotation marks and the right facing arrow underneath.

In Gid's video render I could not make out any front limbs nor estimate the size of the fencing.

I have tried layering the video with various filters and enlarging to try to isolate the body shape a bit better but to little avail. I think I now see the possibility of front limbs and possibly the tail is not as bushy as as you describe.

Ray.

@lauriemessage Hi, if you put an @ symbol in comments you'll get options of people to tag, you can also remove some of the quote, the people you tag in blue will get a notification of your reply & it indicates who you are directing your comment at, for instance -- @CubeAce I sort of can see front limbs, it looks to me more like a ground creature, it's got a fat bum, Google says Marmot maybe? it's not the best of climbers, a cat would simply jump up & squirrels are fast & nimble with a flicky tail,

Could be. 👍👍

That's 2 for a squirrel.

In the US they are known as Ground Squirrels and are the heaviest members of the squirrel family.

The animal returned a few times, and the video is clear enough to see that it's a raccoon. If anyone wants to view it, here's a link to the two videos https://we.tl/t-mIJpN1wrL7 . Thanks again!!!

Concerning marmots, they live in the mountains. There aren't any ground squirrels near the house in question. There are prairie dogs in the Denver metro area.
