AVI - Lagarith with MP3 audio

Greetings,

Many moons ago I ripped one of my late fathers DVDs, created by a 3rd party, to a Lagarith AVI with MP3 Audio for "cleaning up" at a later date.

That later date has arrived and I've started looking at one of the files today in MS2025 and it's soooooo slooooow to load and almost impossible to edit; MS seemingly pondering every frame before it decides whether to apply the edit or not. Lagarith and MP3 is no stranger to me, although I do normally use PCM audio. However that's irelevent.

Thinking that it's odd, I wondered if the AVI was corrupted in some way so loaded it into Avidemux, which seems to be able to re-create some timing (or something anyway) and "repair" AVI's, and using copy for both video and audio created another AVI.

I tried the resulting file in MS2025 and it was soooo sloooow again.

Loaded the original into another converter (Pazera Video to AVI), again using copy for everything, I created yet another AVI.

The resulting file played perfectly in MS2025 and editinf flew as usual.

Aha I thought and compared Mediainfo's for the "Good" and the "Bad" and apart from a few bytes they were identical.

Hmm I thought and as I was contemplating what to do next while drinking a cup of tea I noticed, in Windows Explorer" that the "Bad" file had a grand sounding MP3 S16 2.0 and the "Good" file had a rather common MP3 2.0.

I decided it was the S16 bit that was the problem. I looked it up and wished I hadn't. From what I can gather an MP3 S16 2.0 seems to be an MP2 that can't decide what it wants to be or something like that.

Can someone please put me out of my misery and explain the difference between the 2 MP3s I have and, more to the point, why MS2025 doesn't like one of them.

I would also be interested on theories why a direct copy in Avidemus apparently fails to correct it but a direct copy in Pazera succeeds but that's probably a piece of string question.

edit - ps I think I used Virtualdub for the rip but would'nt like to put too many pennies on that.

Hi Andy.

Do you have a copy of Windows Explorer on your system? I always thought that for MEP/MMS/VPX it was essential to be installed to seamlessly work with the mp3 format in those programs.

If I'm wrong I will uninstal my copy.

Greetings Ray,

No, INTERNET Explorer is not part of the bloatware currently residing on my system. I'd never heard about it being required for MP3 playing.

Specs sheet say

MP3²... ² Requires Windows Media Player Version 10 or higher.

I don't know the answer but MediaInfo probably doesn't tell the whole story.

Ray, I don't have WMP on my Win 11 machine and Magix imports various MP3s without issue. There are certain types of MP3s it doesn't like but in the main, they import OK.

I've just been playing agian with this and it's true, Mediainfo does NOT tell the whole story.

Using an app called FFprobe that came with the Pazara Suite I use an interesting anomaly has shown up.

While every instance of the video length is accurate, the Format Info displayed by FFprobe shows the duration of the "Bad" video to be longer then the "Good" video but looking at the Stream analysis the duration of both files are correct.

I've tried this with the other 5 files I have in this batch od AVI's and they all have the MP3 S16 2.0 that when re-muxed with Pazera play correctly in MS2025 but when remuxed with Avidemux still exhibit the problem.

I've also narrowed it down to Virtualdub 2 with another quick test saving to Lags and MP3 has the "problem" MP3. The same test using Avidemux gives a video with "normal" Mp3 that plays well in MS2025.

All the "Bad files" play OK in media players and surprisingly OK in the Openshot editor.

Odd but not a problem. These are the only AVI's I have with MP3 format audio so it's easily remedied.

edit - I don't know why but the image as ported to the Site doesn't seem to want to zoom in or out for some reason. It copies and pastes OK though.

Hi Andy.

The image zooms in and out if opened in a new tab.

The info I put up about requiring media player is only visible in the VPX specs section but often I have found things mentioned on the VPX specs page are also relevant to MMS. It could however relate to exporting only as the info is not specific.

Ouch - however I have to agree!

Looking at the info on the original and redone AVI files I suspect that you have either the 'DV Type issue' or the original file needs repairing see @AAProds comment in this post for a possible solution (3rd paragraph).
