Audio problem with playback of old .avi files

William-Murphy wrote on 1/4/2020, 10:23 PM

Using Movie Edit Pro v.19.0.1.31 with Win10 but have also had this problem in earlier versions of MEP. When I import an old Sony hi8 video, the video is fine but the audio is corrupt and noise so loud you can't understand it - sounds like the film sprocket sounds that you used to hear on 16mm projectors. Really loud. The file plays fine on other video players with normal sound. I was thinking this might be a codec problem but why would it play ok on other software? This is the only video editor I've chosen to purchase and tech support has been unresponsive. Attached is a sample video clip but it might sound ok on your machine with your codecs. Any ideas?

Hi William.

Your video file is showing an audio sample rate of 44.1 kHz and your MEP default project settings would be at 48kHz.

However, saying that I'm experiencing the same problem you are with playback and I can't get the file to play properly on any player.

Are these original files or have they already been converted to digital from analog tape? If conversions I'd suspect the the conversion process. How does / did your camcorder work? Tape of memory card? Specs of your SonyHi8 may shed some light on the problem.

Hi,

try to convert your original file to mp4 file using a converter like Movavi or any converter found on the Web not necessary to buy one just to try and use in Magix. If Magix cannot correct ask for a refund and for the same price you can switch to another video editor.

Also check your computer update for bios, sound card and graphic card plus windows update.

@William-Murphy

Hi William.

I've been looking into this a bit more. If (and I suspect it is) this video is from a camcorder using tape then the only thing I can find is this warning in the manual about using the SP mode( to lengthen recording time).

It seems to support what I'm seeing in the waveform of the audio from the file.

This is a section of just over one second.

The recorded audio is much lower and the spikes is the fluttering sound which I think could be the described 'mosaic' sound in the warning that is described from the only Sony Hi8 handycam manual I could find on the net which would suggest you need to transfer the file via the Hi8 to get correct playback or transfer of the file.

I could be wrong about all of this but without further information from yourself I don't know which possible cause to pursue to help.

Thanks Ray. There was software that would "see" a firewire connection to a Sony Hi8 camera and let you transfer analog to digital back in the days of Vista, WIn98, and earlier. I have viewed and edited those files for years using several viewers/editors, just not MEP. The file I posted opens up fine in Corel VideoStudio x9 and in Photoshop CC but I'm better versed in the features and procedures in MEP for video. It would probably open/edit fine in Adobe Premier. There must be some codec embeded in the analog conversion that MEP doesn't handle well but that others do. I'm still looking. Thanks for your thoughts.

CubeAce wrote on 1/5/2020, 6:21 PM

@William-Murphy

Hi William.

I think it more likely that perhaps maybe other programs can suppress the audio spikes which are clearly visible in the audio file. The actual video audio soundtrack level is way below what it should be. There is a noise reduction section within MEP that could be used to reduce the offending noise as it can be asked to listen and remove repetitive sounds by taking a 'noise print' of the offending sound.

Try right clicking on the audio wave file and select 'Audio Cleaning' and you should get to the tools from there. They are fairly self explanatory and allow you to listen to any changes you try before committing to implement them.

The only thing I've seen similar in the past to this problem was a copy protection signal that stopped taped analog video from being copied by swamping the original signal with a much stronger one. This looks similar but never seen it in the audio portion before it was always white noise between frames that overloaded the old analog circuitry.

You say you can edit in other programs. It would be interesting to see the waveform of the audio as represented in those editors as I can't see that those spikes would be missing. Also it's very odd I can't play or listen to the file in any of the programs you have said have played it OK on your PC. I tried playing it in Win Amp, VLC Media Player, and Windows own media players. Cubase which refused to open the video file at all but would import the audio section.

Thanks for hanging with me. Like I said, the file opened In VideoStudio x9 and Photoshop CC 2019 and audio was fine.I have 40-50 videos that were converted via firewire from analog Hi8 tape to file like 20 years ago, utilizing capture software either resident in Win3.1, Win95, or Win98 back in the days when Hi8 came out. Or, it could have been captured through an old editing program I used at the time, VideoWave.

For a hoot, I just found my install disk and installed VideoWave Power Edition 5.0 dated 6/21/02 and it actually runs under Win10!! The audio does plays ok but the app has virtually no features.

I don't want to convert audio tracks and put back in and sync in MEP to allow re-edit some of the old work. Too much effort. If I can't solve by a settings or codec solution, I will either learn, edit, and re-save in VideoStudio, which I own, or I'll dust off an old machine with a firewire card and maybe re-convert.

William-Murphy wrote on 1/5/2020, 8:42 PM

I've used MEP over the past 3-4 versions for a long while in order to avoid cost of Premiere. I am a commercial photographer and deal infrequently with video except personal use. I don't think an Adobe subscription is a good cost choice but may rethink that. I have good skill level with MEP, though, and reluctant to change.

Hi,

to change for Cyberlink focusing on 365 plan or Adobe at least 4 times more costly than Cyberlink or paid for Pinnacle Studio 23 ultimate version or cheap no content Movavi, Filmora. Also you can try Resolve this is free but the learning curve is high and you need a good graphic card minimum 2 gig better 4 gig supporting last DirectX version. The best way for you convert your AVI files in something new like mp4 or mov using the same quality than the original file after that you can edit on any video editor. Also check on your computer may be you have a FireWire port on the back if you have it you can capture from your original Hi8 tape and obtain the maximum quality in the video file. The problem is to have 3 or 4 video editor programs in your computer that is a bad mixup and that is my problem.

@William-Murphy

Hi William.

What I'm interested in, is if you can play the files in Video Studio x9 and Photoshop CC 2019, can you see the wave file output and does it still have the spikes I'm seeing in my programs? I can't figure out how the other programs are not thrown by the spikes in the audio. It would be good to see a screen shot if possible please.

Some old programs will run in Win 10. Even if you have to use compatibility mode to run them with. It's the older 32 bit hardware peripherals that won't work as there are no drivers that will work with them. Some programs that rely on such peripherals will also possibly not work or have limited function. I've lost count of sound cards and musical keyboards I can no longer use. Some older digital cameras can no longer have their raw files read as well. Safer to save old images as tiff files or as an adobe DNG file but even that has limitations. It may soon be impossible to view older analog recordings if there is nothing to play them back on or the substrates themselves begin to deteriorate. It's also difficult to predict which file format has the best future for archive use.

Anyway. Good luck and let us know if you get a solution.

Hi

It would help us if we knew what the WAV file was actually encoded as - can you do a MediaInfo analysis of the wav file and post the information from the Text view of MediaInfo.

This issue has arisen before and unfortunately I cannot the post that had the solution.

I couldn't get my screen capture software to work so I just used my phone to video the screen. Clip starts with with file playing in MEP for about 22 sec and then switches to exactly the same file cued up in VideoStudio x9 for same duration. I may decide to open all my old files up in VideoStudio, save as .mp4s, then open back up in MEP for editing. A pain, but maybe the most direct solution unless I lose too much video quality compressing twice.

Hi

In my post above I said 'WAV' when I meant the AVI file that is causing the audio issue - the MediaInfo information for that file is what is needed.

Additionally if you can upload a short (about 10 secs long), non confidential, original AVI that has the issue to somewhere like Dropbox, or other file sharing site - not the forum, Youtube, Vimeo etc as they convert the video, for us to test would help.

@CubeAceunfortunately the mp4 data posted above cannot tell us what the original file was encoded as - uploading of the sample clip to the forum gets converted to mp4 and the original codecs used and data is lost.

Hi John. I was assuming that was his original file or at least the one he could get to play in another program without the audio problem. I didn't realise an embedded clip would be converted in format.

@William-Murphy

I have to agree with John, an original AVI would be very useful to look at and see if there is a way to get it working in MEP, but thanks for showing the two editors and the wave file readout. There is definitely no sign of the offending spikes in the waveform although the audio is not recorded that loud. Just as an aside, a simple 'print screen' jpg would have worked as well to show the difference in the waveform from the Video Studio editor.

Guys, this is way more effort than I expected! And way above my grade level. But I would like to get it resolved so as to be able to find a direct way to use all my existing .avi files, if possible.

I'm concentrating now on the original clip I initially posted of the little boy and dog. All of the old files act the same way though. Embedded below is the DropBox link with the MediaInfo analysis of the file and a 10-sec clip from the original file, saved as .avi, and with the noise. Hope this is what you needed and will help move the diagnosis further.

Hi,

best way is to convert avi file in mp4 h.264 same quality as the original file test using movavi file converter demo your converter file has a watermark but you can check the quality and sound after conversion. If you try to open file using Corel you have to render after this is time consuming for nothing and may be a loss in quality.

YR

I would tend to agree BUT having downloaded the video file from the link and attempted to open it with the latest version of MovAvi Video Convertor Premium the app reports it "cannot open the file"! The error message suggests that it is a codec problem though I would have thought MovAvi really ought to be able to open a DV file.

Having also looked at the MediaInfo data I note a couple of things that are, I think, unusual: there is mention of two audio streams, both apparently identical but both sampled at 32kHz. This latter fact might possibly be at least a contributory factor to the audio problems?

Something is going on.

Cubase could open the video file but the noise and spikes remained and I was using Cubase 4 which was released in 2006.

Win Amp plays the file upside down and with noise. None of my other players play the file without noise and I changed the sample rate of my audio but couldn't get down to 32kHz as it is no longer supported on my machine.

I suspect the recording was made in the SP mode to save recording space as it has the attributes the Hi8 manual I found online warned could happen if not transferred to another medium using the camcorder. I may be wrong about that but it fits the warning description of what would happen.

Then again it could be a lack of the proper codec to play it back or the wrong codec being applied at our end. It's a good job William has an editing package that works with it.

That could well be the case with the audio being in a Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) format. later that changed to LPCM. That could be where the problem arises.

Either way, some way needs to be found to archive the material before the technology to support the files becomes redundant.

NB. The two audio streams are not identical.

Ray.

Hi William,

I'm late to the discussion but just downloaded your file.

"The file plays fine on other video players with normal sound."

For me, as well as MEPP 2016 and 2017, it plays with the projector-like sound you describe in all the players I tried:

MPC-BE, VLC, WMP, PotPlayer, KM Player, IrfanView, QuickTime, Films & TV.

Hi Jeff,

I too was surprised to find that MovAVi couldn't open the file, as it's normally very versatile.

Hi

It would help us if we knew what the WAV file was actually encoded as - can you do a MediaInfo analysis of the wav file and post the information from the Text view of MediaInfo.

This issue has arisen before and unfortunately I cannot the post that had the solution.

Hi there,

I have Magix Viodeo delux MX V. 11.0.6.4

Analog video source reading until Win 10 conversion works fine with Win7.

Analogue video source has not been recognized since the Win 10 update (Sony HI 8 Rec)

With the Win 10 update, drivers may have failed?

I would be very grateful for help.

Hi

. . . . . a 10-sec clip from the original file, saved as .avi, and with the noise . . . .

How did you separate out the 10 sec section of the clip?

As you have already indicated the video plays OK in another program, however the clip you extracted and uploaded shows the issue in any player I open it, and the MediaInfo data would also suggest this is an original file.

Did you extract the clip and export it as AVI with MEP? If so, then this, unfortunately, has introduced the noise.

To be clear we need an untouched original AVI clip that has the issue, at least 10 secs long, if you have one longer it is is OK, within reason.

@CubeAce

. . . . Something is going on. . . .

See my comment above.

. . . . The two audio streams are not identical . . . .

The MediaInfo data indicates 2 channels ie the audio is stereo. For multi stream audio MediaInfo has and additional line in the data which states how many audio streams there are - the audio in the clip appears to be standard CD bitrate, bit depth and sampling frequency.

Terry- I now discover I can open the file with good sound with VLC 2.1.5, RealPlayer, Quicktime, and Win Media Player. For whatever reason, just not MEP 19.0.1.31. Your post made me think to go back to open MEP 15.0.0.114 and the problem existed there too. I don't have any earlier version installed on this machine but maybe I've never edited the archived files since converting from tape via VideoWave app and have never attempted further edits with MEP - maybe MEP has never read them. I plan to look back on some old external drives to look at file creation dates to see.

Hi,

We still need an original file to test, one that does not work properly in MEP. Please post again. Do not post an export from MEP as you did before.
