Audio not importing

Gary-Beckwith wrote on 3/1/2025, 4:37 PM

Hi!

I have been using an old version of Movie Studio (v13) for a while and figured it was time to upgrade.

Having some major issues with the new version.

I'll start with one problem, when I import a video file, there is no audio. with v13, whenever I imported a video file, it would create two tracks, one video and one audio. Now with version 2025, i am only getting a video track. it plays silent and there is no audio track..

Am i missing something? where's the audio track? where's the sound?

thanks

@Gary-Beckwith Hi, there's a couple of options you need to check,

Right click the video on the timeline to see this option.

Was the old version Vegas Movie Studio? If so Magix Movie Studio isn't an upgrade, Magix have sold you a completely different product that has never been related to Vegas. Read my comment in this post https://www.magix.info/us/forum/edited-video-length--1344678/#ca1966409

Hi

If @Gid suggestions do not result in the audio being heard we need more information

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version number as found under Help, About., see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

To check the video file you are importing does not contain a 'none standard' combination of video and audio encoding formats, download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

thank you for the response @Gid. I found the setting to show the audio as a separate track. thanks! however I can't get the software to function properly. it is running very slow. I've tried importing a few files with horrible results::

1) .mov file, 9GB 4k.
there is no video for me to see or preview. just a black screen
when i hit the "play/preview" button, it sputters, stops, ... "preload" shows in the status bar, then it starts, then it stops. there's no way I could edit video with it like that:

2) same results with a 1080 .mov file

3) similar results with .mp4 file recorded from my phone. it "plays" in the preview without sputtering but there is no video to see

weird how earlier it was giving me video but no audio now it's the other way around.

something definitely isn't right!

in regards to your other question. my previous version was SONY Movie Studio Platinum version 13.0. The program is listed right on my MAGIX account:

Image removed by Moderator because it includes confidential serial key

Really the version13 was working fine for me. it had a couple bugs but at least I could use it. I thought it was time to upgrade so I went to the MAGIX site, it remembered me and suggested I upgrade to the Movie Studio Platinum 2025...

any ideas how to get this working?

thanks!!

This is what Vegas Pro looks like, it will prob look a lot like your old Movie Studio & it will perform just like your old one too

I don't use ,mov files in Magix Movie Studio, as you've seen they work very poorly if at all., In fact although I have the most recent version of Magix (bought because I've had it for 20yrs & it was cheap to update) , for quite a few yrs I haven't used Magix Movie Studio at all, I use Vegas Pro which is essentially the correct upgrade from SONY Movie Studio Platinum,

-------------

You'll prob need to convert your .mov file to MP4 so you can use the Magix Movie Studio.

I know it's a workaround, but this can be done losslessly with AVIDemux as I describe here.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@Gary-Beckwith

Hi.

First of all, Welcome to the user to user Magix forums.

The problem with mov. files in general is they were designed by Apple to work on their products and have never been able to be used natively in Windows without additional help via some form of software help. That used to come at first with the QuickTime for Windows app but seems now to be done natively within whatever software you run but is not always able to fully decode the plethora of varying versions of the mov. format. Even some old Windows mts and mp4 file types can prove problematic if they were not used mainstream, had odd frame rates or audio formats / sample rates.

It was one reason @johnebaker also asked for you to provide information about the file via using MediaInfo which is a very helpful tool in helping to diagnose such problems with trying to run such video wrappers / codecs.

While @Gid is also correct about the upgrade from your earlier copy of Vegas Movie Studio should have been Vegas Pro Edit if you had wanted to keep your previous functionality, that may not have worked as the specs needed to run that software has increased as it has with your current version of Magix Movie studio and your system may struggle depending on the resolutions you are currently working at. Your nVidia GT710 has not had a driver update since 2020 and if you are working with a mov. file, that is 9GB and 4k, then you are not going to have a smooth experience with any video editor if it works with such files at all working with a modern editing package. The size of the file and resolution suggests it is coming from a more modern source than the hardware sitting in your computer. Possibly a smart phone.

You could see if you can use your copy of Vegas Movie Studio 13 which at least will run with your hardware if the program will run in Windows 10. You will also need to download a copy of QuickTime for Windows version 7.1.6 for the program to handle the mov. files which it may or may not do depending on the mov. file structure. If the files are coming from a new smart phone, that may not work the the mov. wrapper may well have a more modern sophisticated codec working beneath its shell.

For now your best bet is probably going along with the other suggestions of converting the files to another format.

At least that is how I currently see it.

Ray.

@Gid Of historic interest Sony Vegas Movie Studio 13 was an oddball version different in several ways from its predecessors. Under its new Magix ownership Magix Vegas Movie Studio 14 reverted back to how it used to be, much to the relief of many VMS users.

@CubeAce Windows 10 has been around for years now and VMS13 and VMS12 both worked for me on Windows 10.

@Gary-Beckwith A long shot but years ago sometimes altering the file suffix from "mov" to "mp4" made them readable. Try it on one of your problem files. If it doesn't work you can change it back.

MOV is just a folder and nowadays mov files have no real relevance to Apple and don't need Quicktime as they contain codecs easily handled by Windows software. As @johnebaker once posted in another thread - Quicktime is still required for MOV files where the Format ID is identified as JPEG or PNG encoded video, it is no longer required for MOV h.264/AVC encoded import.

Hi

@CubeAce commented: 'Your nVidia GT710 has not had a driver update since 2020 and if you are working with a mov. file, that is 9GB and 4k, then you are not going to have a smooth experience with any video editor'

The poor performance in playback of the timeline has several issues which have combined to create the severe issue you are having with playback

  • GT710 does not support NVENC, which, as there is no suitable graphics chip (GPU) in the AMD processor, is required to provide hardware acceleration for decoding and encoding.

Movie Studio Platinum 13 was using the old NVCUVENC (CUDA) decoding/encoding feature. NVCUVENC which handled the hardware acceleration on the GPU. NVCUVENC was replaced with NVENC starting with the GTX 745 GPU series.

  • Working with 4K video imposes a high load on the computer, in your case on the CPU as a result of no hardware acceleration being available.

  • If the video is HEVC encoded, this also increases the load on the CPU, it is a highly compressed video format requiring more CPU power than, for example, the more universal mp4 h.264/AVC encoded video.

Unfortunately, you are in a Catch 22 situation:-

  • Turning on the Automatically create proxy files on import option in the Movie settings (E key), which creates lower resolution copies of the original video clip for use on the timeline while editing, will help, however these too will take some time to create and take up extra disc space. Note: Proxy files are not used for exporting.

  • Turning on the lightning symbol bottom right of the preview monitor, it is blue when on, if it is not already on may also help.

  • Ideally replacing the GT 750 with a modern graphics card which supports 4K video, HEVC decoding/encoding using NVENC, should significantly improve playback and import / export times, however the computer motherboard slot types may restrict which GPU could be used.

For the audio issue we need the MediaInfo data.

thank you everyone for trying to help me. to respond to a few things:

I really would rather not download a program just to analyze the format of the video file I'm trying to import. It is having a similar problem with multiple file types. it is not showing the video. only the audio.

I do understand that .mov was originally for apple and quicktime. but it is one of the most common types of video files I find. it is the default video type produced by the Zoom H2Qn video camera which is very popular:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Q2n4K--zoom-q2n-4k-handy-video-recorder-with-xy-microphone

please note, my Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 has zero issues loading .mov files. perhaps it made me install quicktime a long time ago? it's not on my computer now.

short of the "media info" here is a screenshot of the file info:

One other thing, even with an mp4 file (pretty universal) that is not 4k, it seems the MAGIX 2025 program was very slow and couldn't manage the preview.

I'm not sure really what to do here. the version 13 was working pretty well, it could import all these files without a problem. it had a couple minor bugs but otherwise worked. this new MAGIX product seems like a lot of trouble just to get it to work with my computer and my files.

The Magix website actually still offered me the installation file for my old version 13. I'm going to try reinstalling that program and see if the bugs go away, before i spend too much time trying to reformat all my source files, purchase a new video card, etc...

if anyone has any more suggestions .....

thanks

@Gary-Beckwith

Hi

Thanks for the information, the properties of the MOV file does tell us some of the information required, however not 2 important parameters of the video which are relevant to the playback and audio issue - i.e. if the video is variable or constant frame rate, and the audio encoding format.

MediaInfo is free from adverts and PUPs/ Viruses, you can scan the downloaded ZIP file to check if this worries you.

. . . . .mov was originally for apple and quicktime. . . .

This is true however Quicktime is strictly for MAC and Apple devices, the Windows version has not been updated for more modern encoding formats for about 10 years.

. . . . it is one of the most common types of video files I find . . . .

It was 10 - 15 years ago. MOV like MP4 is a container file format, not a video format and has been superseded by the MP4 container file format due to Apple dropping the Windows version of Quicktime.

Has the MOV file been recorded using the Zoom H2Qn, or is this being used as an example of the video format and the source of the other video files that have the same issue?

. . . . my Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 has zero issues loading .mov files . . . .

This is not relevant for the reasons I gave previously - point 1. MMS 2025 cannot use Hardware Acceleration (HWA) as the GT710 does not support NVENC which is a requirement when using a Nvidia graphics card.

. . . . it seems the MAGIX 2025 program was very slow and couldn't manage the preview. . . .

As I previously commented, 4K UHD 3840 x 2160 puts a very high load on the CPU/processor, as there is no HWA available that MMS 2025 can use.

One positive factor is the encoding format is h.264 (AVC) and not h.265 (HEVC), and Quicktime should not be needed, if it was, you would have had a pop-up message telling you the first time you imported a video file format that needs it.

Did you try turning on Proxy files and the preview monitor lightning icon to see if there was any improvement in playback?

Hi Gary.

Here is the MediaInfo of a file I have that gives similar problems as your file does (No audio and difficult to export) even though my system copes with the newer programs.

It's not even HD but a strange frame rate and even stranger audio sample rate and frame rate for audio in an early mp3 format.

The file loads and plays the video only but will not load into my copy of Vegas Pro Edit 20.

The file plays fine in a player like VLC but not any Windows player.

The MediaInfo app is very small file size wise and shows us possible problems with video files of which I have highlighted in my image. All of us that reply here have it on our own systems. (as we are users like yourself and not Magix staff who are very rarely seen on these forums).

The problem with newer programs are they are often built to take advantage of newer components and the demands of the newer operating systems they use. Often some of the offered third party plugins need more powerful computing power than the base program.

The reason I earlier said if you can get it to work is if you can actually download it from the server. Internet protocols have changed since that program came out. Not sure if it will effect the downloader.

Hi Ray

. . . . It's not even HD but a strange frame rate and even stranger audio sample rate and frame rate for audio in an early mp3 format. . . . .

The video is Soreson SVQ3 encoded which is h.263 and was designed for early video-telephony hence the odd resolution and framerate, and audio sample rate.

The encoding format is obsolete, supported by very few video editors, conversion can be done, mainly by FFMPEG based converters to a modern format eg h.264/AVC

@Gary-Beckwith's video is 4K UHD 3840 x 2160 h.264/AVC 23.976 fps NTSC with, as yet, an unknown frame rate mode.

Hi John.

I found my own way of getting the soundtrack into MMS / VPX and using the original video clip to upscale and tidy up the output mage. I was wondering whether the MS in the audio stood for mid side or not. I was surprised I could not get it to load into Vegas though. It still blurs slightly when the frame rate drops to next to nothing. Not much I can do about that as the actual frames concerned are blurred. Next will be my collection of Real player videos. Imagine if you could get a 4K CRT monitor 😉.

At first, I thought the OP was using a 10bit file in the MOV wrapper. But without MediaInfo to give file information, it is sort of hard to say specifically what is going on.

Here is a question that I do have. If @Gary-Beckwith GPU does not have the necessary NVENC for hardware decoding, in Program Settings>Device Options tab, is it listed in Hardware acceleration?

Hi Tony

. . . . GPU does not have the necessary NVENC for hardware decoding, in Program Settings>Device Options tab, is it listed in Hardware acceleration? . . .

It is possible that the GT 710 does appear in the GPU options, as it does 'support' DirectX 12, however only at the 11.0 feature level, so is of very limited use using the CUDA cores.

The GPU does not have the dedicated hardware-based decoder/encoder (NVDEC/NVENC) modules, which were introduced with the Maxwell 'architecture' starting (IIRC) the GTX 745, the 710 is the older Kepler 2.0 'architecture'.

Movie Studio 13 is able to handle the video files easily is due to it using CUDA to access the faster graphical processing unit, 'GPU' sometimes referred to as 'Cuda cores, for processing.

Hi, absolutely no problem playing that, instant full fps playback in VP21 & 22, however If I untick Enable the Quicktime Plugin in Preferences - Depreciated features then it won't load, I don't think this is ticked by default so I suspect that is your problem.

I've put this here on this post also for anyone else as Quicktime is mentioned, but I'm not sure if as @ericlnz implied Quicktime has to be installed or if this is a native plugin in VP/Windows. & I don't know what/if MMS needs Quicktime.

Hmm, you mentioned earlier 'QuickTime for Windows version 7.1.6', I have QuickTime 7.7.9 installed, I don't know if there's a difference.

Right click the event on the timeline says qt7plug, I don't know enough about that to comment.

My VP is pretty much at default settings, I don't think anything I have changed affects whether this file loads or not..

Hi Gid.

I had previously downloaded QuickTime 7.7.6 but on checking I do have QuickTime 7.7.9 .

It must have come with Vegas. The video section plays in MMS 2024 and VPX 14 programs but not the audio.

I am missing the Windows photo app and can't get to re-download it. Other than that I'm not aware of missing anything and can't see a connection between that and my audio problem.

I am not getting the same setting options as you are in Vegas 18 or 20 pro Edit and no audio in MMS / VPX.

@johnebaker

Hi John.

I knew there was some other converter once.

Did you want me to give you a link to the file to test to see if your Intel based system is coping with it?

Do you have the same settings available to you as Gid has?

Can we stop yakking about Vegas and files most of us don't have access to and stick to solving the OP's problem please.
