Audio Input issues

Michael-True wrote on 12/18/2022, 9:50 PM

I have just purchased an ASUS laptop with Windows 10 installed. I am using the mic in function to import audio from an external recording device. The Sound Forge 13 however is not properly monitoring the audio signal. What do I need to do to configure the SF program to properly monitor the signal?

@Michael-True

Hi

Check in the Windows settings, Privacy & security, Microphone (scroll down page), Let desktop apps access your microphone option is turned on.

Thank you - this was already done. At this point, when I record I get a wave imput on the screen as it records but am still not getting any signal on the volume meters, both in arm mode and during recording. Obviously I am getting a signal in but can not see to adjust volume during pre-record set-up or during the recording itself..

Seasons greetings and welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @Michael-True. I have more questions than answers

Obviously I am getting a signal and I am using the mic in function to import audio from an external recording device.

Is the "external recording device" a recorder or A/D interface?
Are you sure Sound Forge is recording the audio? After recording, can you see the waveform on the timeline and hear the sound on playback ?
Are you streaming audio or using the 'external recording device' to record, if it is recording, why not just import the file directly to the PC . If streaming, are you using an analog or digital input to the PC and is the desired input 'audio device type' selected in the SF menu "Options> Preferences> Audio- Record"?

Can not see to adjust volume during pre-record set-up or during the recording itself..

The record level is adjusted at the source, mic preamp, or in the interface/soundcard.. whilst viewing the record level meter in "View> Record Options"

rraud - that did the trick - so many settings just to get the sound in!!! I need to get some new stereo adapters with occasional static as an issue. btw I am using a Boss 1180 CD standalone digital recorder. It will burn a wave file to a CD but I prefer that it makes data disks for backup. I play back live to my laptop so I can make some minor adjustments to individual track volumes, etc. on the fly. Appreciate johnebaker comments as well, as that also helped in setup. You guys rock!

I want to use Soundforge on a laptop, but of the 3 laptops at my disposal, none has a stereo audio input, only a headset input. I know that jack provides a stereo output, but only a mono mic input. Is there no way on these laptops to connect a line level stereo device for use in recording to Soundforge? And if so, are there laptops that have a line level audio input? If not, it appears that using Soundforge on a laptop for recording from a stereo source is a non-starter. Or am I missing something?

@robert-w2647Bob You need to get an external USB audio Interface, for example from Focusrite, Behringer, M-Audio etc. Usually no computer comes with this built-in.

If you need to use the laptop's (unbalanced) analog mic input, many laptops (and smart phones) use a 3.5mm TRRS (tip-ring-ring-sleeve) four conductor jack. As I recall, ring #2 and the sleeve terminals are for input. Mic adapter plugs can be purchased on ebay or elsewhere on-line.
