Are there any program adjustments that will reduce the video encoding time from the SDHC card to laptop?

It takes 71 minutes to encode a 38 minute,28 object (Scene) video from a SanDisk SDHC class 2 4GB memory card and a further 13 minutes to burn it to a 4x DVD-RW disk. Video resolution 1920 x 1080 pixles at 30 f.p.s in HD.

On advice from Jessops and Currys superstores i purchased a SanDisk Extreme class 10  4GB  30MB/s memory card and videod 38 minutes containing 28 objects in 1920 x 1080 pixles at 30 fps in HD. There was no improvement in the 71 minute encoding and 13 minute burning times. I had 1 title and 28 Wiping Transitions plus the Sparkles title screen in both tests.

The MPEG Encoder Settings Bit rate in kBit/sec was 6224 (Default) and Quality 10 (Default) Ticked Smart Rendering. DVD Burning speed 1x. Sanyo Full HD video camera set at 1920 x 1080 pixles at 30 f.p.s.

Hardware  Acer Aspire 5742, Intel Core i5-460M processor, Intel HD Graphics, 4 GB DDR3 Memory, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, Tesco DVD-RW 4x Disks.

Software   Windows Home Premium system, MAGIX Easy HD Video program.

Do these times and settings sound reasonable or should i adjust any program setting to reduce overall processing times? I am new to HD videoing and cannot find any advice in your handbook on encoder settings.

Kind Regards John Warner

Hi

For your spec laptop I would consider these times reasonable.  If you want to encode HD in near real time you need a quad core i5 or i7 PC running with plenty of RAM eg 8Gb and 64bit OS.

If you copy the video from the SanDisk to HDD, first you may get a small increase in encoding speed - assuming that you are placing the SanDisk in a card reader or connecting to the camera b y USB then the hi speed SanDisk will not show any increase in performance as you are limited by the USB speed. (also the more USB devices you have on the same hub will slow down the theoretical max transfer speed ie the max possible speed is shared).
