Anchor links not working correctly

Go to the Biography page ( http://lochrie.doanehoag.com/biography.htm ) and just below the mural at the top there is a text link "See more info here" that takes you to an anchor on the Data Links page located on the text "News from the States" about half way down the page. The link to the anchor works, but when you get there you can't scroll to the top of the page and the menu. I've tried this over several times with different browsers and I get the same problem every time.

Hi doane

. . . . The link to the anchor works, but when you get there you can't scroll to the top of the page and the menu. . . . .

Works OK here in Firefox, Chrome and IE using mouse wheel, dragging side bar and up/down arrows - have you cleared your browser caches?

I cannot test Edge it has never worked properly for me - usually crashes or hangs.

Can you scroll up to the menu at the top? I've tried it in three different browsers and I can only go up to the bottom of the wide top desert image. I tried it with top of page link at the bottom of the page as well, same results. Yes, I cleared the browser cache and also did a Ctrl+F5 on each page as well

Hi doane

Odd, going back to the page linked to above I can get what you are seeing to occur.

Have a look at the text you have entered into the page, on inspecting the HTML in FF I can see some coding errors eg div tags, which should be displayed as blue, are grey indicating that there a possible error in the content that is written into the div before the grey ones.

Check that all quoted text has both opening and closing matching quotes.

I can also see the extraneous character indicated below.

Either could be causing the issue or if the issue persists after the above checks, then there could be another bug like the drop shadow error.

John: I have been working on this most of the day... it's getting crazy... I loaded an earlier version of the site that doesn't have the problem, and put the pages side by side to try to see if there are any differences between the pages and I can't find any that make any difference when I make them the same. I removed the extraneous character you mentioned and it didn't solve the problem.. am about ready to give up on this. Or maybe try to copy the Data & LInks page that works from the earlier version over to this one. Would I create a blank page first, than paste it in and then delete the old one and rename the copied one? not sure how to do all this and it's turning into a ridiculous effort.

Okay, I sort of figured it out, although I'm not sure exactly what I did. The problem was with the background on the Data Links page and somehow it also had a text object box on it. Have no idea how that happened or if that caused the problem, but that and adjusting the background size by unlocking it and moving it seems to have solved the problem and the anchor links are working and you can scroll up to the menu now.

Can someone please explain to me what I did?

. . . . The problem was with the background on the Data Links page and somehow it also had a text object box on it. . . . .

Interesting - I could not pin this one down to a specific error hence the advice I gave you, nothing was showing up on the page and when I did an HTML compare in Notepad++ of the same page when browsed to directly and the page browsed to via the more information link, Notepad ++ said the pages matched.

The only clue was the greyed out div tags when inspecting the page in FF

. . . . Can someone please explain to me what I did? . . . .

At a guess you clicked on the page while the text tool was selected and WD inserted a text box and then you went on to make other changes on the page.

OT: have you had any issues with Firefox (I am on 56.0.2) displaying a web page as a narrow strip down the centre of the page - I have had this a couple of times, a reload corrects the display, and may explain why I could not see your issue initially

Pleased you have it sorted.

John, thanks, no I have had this problem in three different browsers and refreshing the cache didn't help. Its working no, but not exactly. If you take the anchor like to the data page you will notice that it isn't able to scroll all the way to the top, but it is getting up to the menu. If you refresh the page or go to another page and come back it is fine again.

I'm thinking that maybe some other text box is in there someplace messing it up? Or could the way the background rectangle be not set up correctly... I really don't understand the concept of the background and the pasteboard rectangle sizes. The background on most of the pages is about the width of the page and the length, but stops short of the top, while the pasteboard rectangle is huge around it. Is that normal? Will take a look today if I have time

I've looked all through the objects in the right hand list and I can't find any thing out of the ordinary. I found the one small text object and deleted it but it didn't help.

Hi doane

I see form the HTML code that there appear to be 7 elements with a shadow effects applied.

I am beginning to suspect that this issue may be connected to the other issue with shadows on elements.

I removed all the shadows and it still does it. I think it might have something to do with the way the back ground is set up, but I can't see a difference between it and the earlier version that works. I'm going to start deleting elements on the bad version till something corrects the problem if you can't solve it from your end.

Thanks,

I think that this software has some severe bug problems handling combinations of actions and that was what I was running into, especially with the parallax action. I ended up giving up on trying to get that one to work and did a simple drop and fade in for the title in the upper banner. It seems to be OK now.

Take a look: http://lochrie.doanehoag.com/index.htm

Thanks for everyone trying to help

Hi doane

Personally I think that looks very good - it adds life to the web page. The method is not seen very often so it also adds a touch of uniqueness.

Cheers
